At exactly 7:15 a.m., on a dreary Monday morning in August, I was awakened from a deep sleep and immediately knew something was different. I stumbled out of bed and made my way to the kitchen where I was greeted by the delicious smells of coffee brewing and pancakes cooking on the griddle. The kitchen table was set with our "guest's only" linens and flatware and there was a lovely arrangement of freshly cut flowers in my favorite crystal vase. Since, Monday morning breakfasts commonly consisted of cornflakes or a protein shake, I was very pleasantly stunned. What had I done to deserve such a treat on just a typical Monday morning? Well, the answer came soon enough.
My boyfriend of 2 years, Todd, looked at me with a slightly mischievous look in his eyes, and told me to have a seat. I obliged. He served me a piping hot cup of coffee and a plate full of decadent raspberry covered pancakes. I was already in heaven and silently plotting ways to avoid leaving for work inside of the next hour. Todd, then did something I would never forget, he got the linen napkins out of the cabinet and meticulously placed one on my lap. I smiled and teased him that he would have to be responsible for laundering them as well. He nodded and just looked at me with a look that could only be described as expectant. I unfolded the soft blue napkin and was all of a sudden very short of breath; there, nestled in the linen folds was a beautiful 14 karat Black Hills Gold engagement ring. The elegant design was even more extraordinary because Todd knew that, just like the ring itself, my family had lived in South Dakota for numerous generations. This was a piece of jewelry that I would undoubtedly cherish forever.
The next few months were busy; I had always wished to be a June Bride, so our date had been set for June 23rd. My mother has assured me that 10 months would give us plenty of time to plan and prepare but I was still nervous. The months of September and October were fully dedicated to finding "the gown"; we had scoured every boutique and fine department store right up until we found the perfect gown with a sweetheart neckline and an elegant veil. Lovely rose colored bridesmaid dresses were than procured, followed by tuxes for the groomsmen and best man. By December, we had booked my family's church in South Dakota and had found the perfect banquet hall for our reception. February was all about the floral arrangements and we decided upon pink peonies, white gardenias and Gerber daises.
Before I knew it, March was upon us and the wedding was only a mere 3 months away. After sending out our custom made, letter-pressed invitations, we knew that our big day was truly happening and we could not have been more excited. The last piece of business was the wedding rings and we were determined to find ones that would honor our wedding just as we honored each other. Todd had already done such an beautiful job with picking the engagement ring; we knew that our wedding rings would also have to be Black Hills Gold as well. We decided upon matching 14 karat gold wedding bands made by Landstroms, complete with the pink and green grape leaves and a 10 point center diamond. They were truly beautiful and marked the perfect ending to our wedding ceremony planning.
With our wedding ceremony now just a matter of weeks away, all of our nerves and anxieties have faded and we are each left feeling overjoyed and eager to commence our lives together. Wedding planning, can at times be overwhelming, but it is also a once and lifetime experience and one that I will always cherish.
