How to Upload Joomla Template

Joomla templates are a set of files that determine the appearance outlook of a Joomla website. It includes many file types like HTML, PHP, CSS, XML, JavaScript and image files and directories. Joomla offers simple and varied ways to change the templates. The essential steps to follow in order to upload your Joomla template are as follows.

1. Ensure that the template file to be uploaded is present in the computer hard disk.
2. Login to your Joomla website and navigate to the administration panel>extensions>install/uninstall. Select install/Uninstall. A box pops up instantly.
3. The first option is Upload Package File. Now browse the downloaded template package and click on the Upload File& Install button.
4. Go to Extensions> Template Manager and select the default button on your template to make it your website's theme.
5. If the template is successfully uploaded, a notification Install Template Success will be displayed, and if it fails, another notification with possible reasons of failure will be listed. Try to rectify those mistakes and again proceed to upload and installation.
6. The newly installed template will now be available in the Template Manager. The options and customization facilities pertaining to the use of the new template are also seen available.

The host web server sometimes may not support GZIP enabled with PHP. If you have designed your own template and don't want to pack it for uploading, or you want to upload more than one template, then it becomes necessary to upload the template files to the web server via an FTP client. Open your favorite FTP client and simply upload the template folder and subdirectory on the server. Usually the default directory is

Joomla_root/administrator/components/com_installer/templates/yourtemplatename

Click on the upload button. Go to administration panel>extensions>install/uninstall>Install from Directory and type in the location of template. After clicking the install button, the new template will be installed in the directory Joomla_ root/template/your template name on the web automatically.

Note
If you do not know the advance techniques of database or PHP, do not try FTP method of installing templates, because at a later stage, some codes or entries have to be made during the installation.

Install from URL is yet another other option available under the admin area> install/uninstall. Here you can specify the URL to install a template from web.

All these methods can be used to upload your favorite template to your Joomla website.

Install from a directory is to be chosen under Extension manager>Install/uninstall tab.
