My husband and I were fortunate and unfortunate enough to buy a home with wood siding. At the time all we thought about was how charming the home was, and how perfectly the wood siding blended in with the natural beauty of the mountain background. It was life through rose-colored glasses, until we met our new nemesis: Xylocopa violacea, otherwise known as the carpenter bee. If you do not know what a carpenter bee is, count yourself lucky.
If you happen to be like us and you own a home with wood house siding, then you know what a pain in the neck these insects can be. While they do not sting, they wreak havoc on our home. They bore small holes, about a centimeter in diameter into the wood house siding. You can hear them gnawing all the time. It is just like you would imagine the sound to be; a small chewing sound.
I noticed the bees lurking near my front porch. They kind of hover in the air. I have even found a good handful sized pile of sawdust underneath my sawhorses that I keep in my carport. I was worried that the bees were going to cause structural damage to my wood house siding. So I started doing a little research. Turns out, the bees are solitary. They don't group in colonies like honeybees and bumblebees. Since they don't group together, they don't create large nests or tunnels that could cause structural damage to my home.
Second thing I found out about the carpenter bee is that they only cause surface tunnels. They do not go deep inside the house. While the holes they create are very unsightly on my lovely wood house siding, they are nothing more than small holes ticking the outer paneling. Here's where the dilemma comes in though. the carpenter bees are a major pollinator for the local plants. Since I have a garden, I really need to bees to pollinate my plants. So it is either tiny hole in my Swiss cheese looking wood house siding, or my plants don't thrive.
I did find that there are some interesting tools you can use to protect your home and you wood house siding from the bees. There is what looks like a small tennis racket with battery powered electric cross strings. So enjoy a game of carpenter bee tennis for some exercise and to reduce the local bee population. Then there was a carpenter bee trap. Seriously, this thing was two plastic water bottles taped together at the mouth, attached to a small board with a hole cut into it. Apparently the bee enters the hole, thinking it is one of his holes, and then he falls down in the bottle. I guess if you have some people you don't like who have wood house siding, you can take the bees to their house and release them. The battle rages on at our house in the meantime though.
