When picking out your kitchen flooring, it is good to keep a few things in mind. How big is your kitchen? Most people don t give a second thought to putting slab of irregular rock tile in their kitchen only to realize their kitchen now looks like an overgrown bathroom. Size matters here. In addition to how big your kitchen is, the next most important aspect of choosing the right kind of kitchen flooring is choosing a good color for your flooring. There is going to be a big difference in the kind of results you will get when you choose colors that do not work with the size of your kitchen. So here are some tips to help you navigate the decision making process.
First, understand that the size of your floor is going to play a big role in what kind of flooring will look good in your kitchen. The rule of thumb is that large floors need large flooring. Larger flooring doesn t have to be 10 by 24 tile. Though that kind of tile could work. It just means that everything needs to be big to make your kitchen flooring look less like and empty desert and more like a warm inviting heart of your home that it should be. So larger tiles are a good choice. If you re thinking about linoleum or even cork flooring, you can get large patterns to accommodate the larger size of your room.
The same principle is true in the inverse. If your kitchen is smaller in floor space, like a galley kitchen, then you might want to try a smaller pattern. Even a small tile pattern will look good. However, too small has a negative effect on the overall look of the room. Mosaic tiles generally are not a good choice, because they are just too reminiscent of a bathroom. A small pattern of a 3 by 3 tile would work, and a nice pattern can be worked into the tile itself. So be aware of the size of your kitchen, and buy kitchen flooring that is going to enhance and not detract from your kitchen.
Color is also important. Just like with the size of the flooring, the color you choose can either add or subtract from the overall look of your kitchen. Bright colors will open the room up, and they will make a small room feel bigger and more spacious. Bright colors can take the natural light in a larger room and reflect it, so you may not need as much artificial light with a bright color. In contrast a darker colors will make a room appear smaller. So darker colors are not advisable for small kitchens. Color and size are going to be the two biggest characteristics you need to consider when deciding on your kitchen flooring.
