Union busting is a term used to describe the methods used by employers to break up or avoid the formation of union groups within their ranks. If you think that union busters are at work in your company, you need to know what techniques they are using to prevent them from succeeding.
To get you a bit more up to speed about union busting here are a couple of methods that some companies and other groups use:
Raising tension between the members – the classic divide and conquer tactic
This is done so that the workers will begin to form factions inside the company, thereby sowing mistrust among them. If there is no trust then they cannot be persuaded to join together to form a trade union. This is usually done by giving more preference to a certain racial group in plain so as the other groups will start feeling animosity towards them. Race is just one way to divide workers; union busters can also use religion and their ideologies to divide the workers and sow mistrust among them.
Seeding misinformation – keeping them confused
One of the most effective methods of union busting is spreading rumors that contain false information among the ranks. Keeping the workers unsure about what is really happening in the company makes them easier to manipulate. These rumors are spread by people within the ranks of the union itself; these members are usually paid or threatened to spread misinformation and cause confusion within the organization. Misinformation can also be used to discourage people from joining a union.
Scare Tactics – fear is a weapon
Threats are often used by management to prevent workers from forming trade unions within the company. They would often scare their employees with pay cuts or poorer working conditions if management found out that they have formed a union; but these are just empty threats. Employers actually have no right to cut their employees' salaries or remove any benefits that they are currently enjoying right now.
Besides threats, companies would sometimes hire their own "police force" to scare the workers and keep them in line.
Using other unions – Pit them against each other
This is a technique that is commonly used in union busting. There is usually more than one trade union in a company, usually there are also factions within the same union that always wants to take control. By making the unions fighting among themselves by coercing them to draft the members of the other groups this will cause instability within the organization and thus making it self destruct.
These are just some of the methods being used today by union busting professionals that are hired by companies to prevent their workers from gathering. If you notice that something unusual is going on within your company and you believe that a union buster is at work, try your best to identify the methods mentioned above and report them to the officers of your trade union organization.
