As physicians demand medical administrative assistants to be certified, their salary range has been increasing in addition to their demand in the healthcare industry. In the past you could go to a doctors office and get a position straight out of high school and be trained as a medical assistant.
There was a grandfather clause put into place that will cover employees falling into this category. However, unless the employee has been employed for several years their salary will not reach the same earning potential of someone who went to school and became a certified medical administrative assistant. Some of the smaller individual practices may still do on the job training but most often people are receiving the formal education.
This education not only improves the skill level of the student but also makes them a greater asset to the healthcare industry regardless of their place of employment.
Salary ranges will depend on where you are working. If your employment is in a large corporation and you received a certification through formal education, you should receive a better salary compared to a person receiving on the job training in a small medical practice. In addition, if you have a diploma or associate degree you will receive a higher starting salary and greater future earning potential.
How salaries are determined other than by your level of education and experience.
Many factors come into play when an organization determines a salary. There are state and federal laws that determine minimum wages. Then what is the fair market value in your region. Companies do a lot of research finding fair market value in order to remain competitive within the market.
There are sites on the web where you can find out if your salary is competitive. I caution you, make sure you are comparing positions and qualifications that are located in your area. Remember, each region, each educational level and years of experience will play a role in the determination of a salary. Therefore, misinterpretations of the information may leave you feeling unsatisfied with your salary.
According to the current studies I read, the certified medical administrative assistant salary will continue to increase just as the demand will increase. Currently, if you are working in a primary care office with 0-2 years of experience the national average is $ 24,000 per year. If you are employed in that same primary care office for 16 years or more the average increases to about $36,000 per year.
Take those same years of experience and apply them to an emergency or outpatient setting and those averages will increase by approximately $3,000 per year. Let me just say, these are only numbers for the average. If you live in an area where the cost of living is extremely low or high these numbers may vary greatly.
As you can see, salaries can differ greatly according to education, experience, area of employment and your local region. My advice, research and know your market. Then be prepared when seeking out your opportunities as a certified medical administrative assistant.
