Author Name: sleep disorders in children, toddler sleep problems
Have you ever found that your child is having trouble sleeping? While we are all aware restful sleep is crucial in naturally repairing the human body, many children all over the world are seriously sleep deprived. Sleep disorders in children are for real. For every three children under the age ten, two or more have experienced various sleep disorders.
These children all pay a price for their sleep problems. Medical studies have pointed out how less sleep during the night will lead to behavioral problems all throughout the day. These have also linked poor sleeping habits with having bad grades in reading, writing and math classes. To add to that, they also showed how sleep-disturbed children display more anxiety disorders and depressive symptoms.
As in the case of the adults, children also have their own reasons why they have trouble sleeping well, and some may be more serious compared to others. But if you have more than one case inside your home, you can always do something about it so everyone can have a good night's rest and become more productive the following day.
Sleep disorders in children are generally classified into two main categories. Dyssomnias in children may include limit-setting sleep disorder, sleep-onset difficulties, inadequate sleep hygiene, snoring and an obstructive sleep apnea, and the insufficient sleep syndrome. The other sleep disorder class called Parasomnias includes night terrors, sleepwalking, nightmares and rhythmic movement disorders (rocking and head banging).
How families and parents handle the situation can have lasting effects on their children's future sleeping habits. If they are able to get things right they can expect the situation will resolve itself over time, otherwise they will have to contemplate about constant sleep disorder struggles and that lingering negative effect on the family.
There are smart ways to tackle these sleep disorders. If you care to understand them well, you will be instrumental in helping your children take on the challenge. For starters, you can try the "cry it out" method (some parents will find it very unusual). This requires parents to simply ignore their child and all his/her crying for a certain time before they attend to the child's needs. They also need to wait further before they go in and reassure their child. It may seem hard especially to the child, but it works. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but this will work well for the long term; parents will help their children to put themselves to sleep on their own considerably.
Another way to deal with your child's sleep disorder would be to establish an efficient sleep routine; it can be made as simple as you would want it to be, give him/her a bath, a couple of cuddles, and end it all up with a bedtime story. This should associate with sleep. Try not to include stimulating activities (games) into the routine.
Homeopathic or herbal remedies can also aid in sleep disorders in children. If you always have a busy day schedule ahead, this is probably the best option. Natural remedies are a better choice than today's conventional sleep drugs with all their side effects. Whenever your child finally establishes his/her own sleep routine, you can discontinue such remedies. Always remember that as parents, you can always do something about it.
