When reading something about diamonds for the first time, unfamiliar words may lead to more questions and sometimes, to confusion. While the concept of the diamond is well-ingrained in our minds, we still seek to understand the different terms associated with it. Familiarization with the diamond language is simple as looking up a noun in the dictionary. Unless you intend to become a jeweler, you can settle with these basic terms.
Brilliance. This is an adjective used to describe how a diamond reflects light. The sparkling quality of a diamond depends on its cut. Socially speaking, brilliance is what enthralls people to purchase more expensive diamonds and as experts advise; it is by far the best indicator of a good buy.
Brilliant Cut. A term attributed to the round diamond, it connotes the presence of 57 facets that optimize brilliance and light reflection. The brilliant cut diamond was not introduced until the late 19th century.
Carat. Carat is the basic unit of measurement for a diamond's weight. One carat is equal to 200mg.
Clarity. A term used to indicate the absence of surface imperfections and inside inclusions in a stone. Imperfections are seen at the diamond's surface while inclusions are seen inside it. You may also hear the word cloud being used sometimes. A cloud refers to a natural inclusion in the diamond which in minute amounts, does not affect brilliance but does so in significant masses.
Color. In its simplest definition, it is the color found in some stones. With respect to brilliance, it is important that stones are colorless to its full extent to optimize its potential brilliance. For white diamonds therefore, the price increases with its colorlessness while those that are colored are apprised according to their pigment occurrence.
Crown. This is the upper section of the diamond from the girdle towards its surface. The tallness of the upper section as measured from the girdle is called the crown height and the slant at which the sides incline from the girdle to the table it called the crown angle.
Culet. The culet is the term used for that little facet at the bottom of the diamond. It is important in order to protect the bottom of the cut stone.
Depth. This refers to the height of the gemstone, from its culet to its surface. Depth is essential in capturing the light so its proportion is carefully measured.
Facets. These are the surface contours of diamonds and are always polished to enhance the stone's overall brilliance.
Fire. Fire is the property and ability of diamonds to refract light. Refraction occurs when light passes into the stone and colors are produced in a similar mechanism as the prism. An effective fire is always refracted from within.
Girdle. This is the band-like part in the diamond through its circumference. It is usually where the set is placed to hold the stone in place.
Pavilion. This is the lower half of the diamond.
Table. This refers to the flat surface of the stone.
