If you only have a day or two of free time, what's the best way to see the Grand Canyon? Take an air tour. By taking a helicopter or plane, you stand a better chance of seeing the entire park.
The Rims
Air tours are available only at the West Rim and the South Rim. Coming from Las Vegas, the West Rim would likely be your destination. A 45 minute flight from Vegas will be required if you plan to visit the South Rim. That being the case, it is recommended to visit the South Rim if you are coming from Phoenix, Scottsdale, or Sedona.
By Helicopter
You are free to ride a helicopter all the way to the bottom of the canyon's West Rim, which is unique. These tours depart from Vegas. A river-rafting trip can be added to your experience at the bottom of the canyon. You will also have an option to add tickets tot he Skywalk -- a bridge that allows you to walk far pas the edge.
From the Grand Canyon Airport you will head to the South Rim. Only one type of flight exists. This flight will go over the Kaibab Plateau, and directly into the Dragoon Corridor. Flights average 30 minutes. Increasing the air time to fifty minutes is of course an option.
By Plane
Airplane tours for the West Rim depart from Las Vegas. The flight time to the rim is a full twenty minutes. You can of course expand your experience by adding a rafting trip, helicopter rides, or even Skywalk tickets.
These trips will depart from Tusyan, which is ten minutes from the National Park. Flights average an hour and go over the South Rim, East Rim, and North Rim. A very popular upgrade of course is the rafting tour that will begin at Glen Canyon Dam, lasting fifteen minutes until reaching Lee's Ferry.
There's also a Las Vegas to South Rim airplane tour. Following the Colorado River, the flight is less than an hour. By the time you land you will have seen 50 percent of the canyon from air. It is also quite popular to upgrade to the helicopter tour.
Meet Your Ride
Helicopter tours are conducted aboard AStars or EcoStar 130s. The EcoStar is typically part of an upgrade package. This chopper has 25 percent more cabin space. It's outfitted with theater-style seats (everyone faces forward) and comes with plenty of leg room. The Fenestron tail rotor delivers a smooth ride over the canyon, and the 180 degree wraparound windshield provides the best possible view.
Many people are under the impression that seeing the Grand Canyon from the air by airplane is done aboard a small aircraft. This is not true. Tours are carried out on a Vistaliner. Holding 19 passengers and featuring some of the largest windows in the industry, you are sure to get the best possible view. As for your safety, the aircraft has the best navigational equipment, along with two FAA-certified pilots.
How to Get A Great Deal
Don't pay full retail price. Shop the Internet. The internet typically has the best deals. An air tour price slashed 35% is not terribly unusual. Booking in advance is also an option. If you wait until the last minute, you will pay a premium.
Time to Fly!
A tour of the Grand Canyon can be a life changing experience. The aerial views are phenomenal. To make it even better however, you could add one of the extras we mentioned. The Grand Canyon invites exploration. And there's not better way to do it than by taking a West Rim or South Rim air tour.
