Among history's more recent artistic representations, but now one of the more popular may be the political cartoon. The political satire cartoon has become imbued upon our culture and our history. It's the time honored art form that expresses ideas, maxims and philosophies in a succinct and well meaning way. Whatever style of political cartoons you love to view, there's really no argument in the indisputable fact that the medium has become one of the most popular in our society today. Almost every political publication has some type of them, and they are becoming more widely and widely used for artists via the internet. There is no doubting that the political cartoon is here to stay.
The genuine history of the political satire cartoon could be traced back to the visual representations that the infant Nation had throughout the Revolution. From the famous "Join or Die" motif to the "Don't Tread on Me" image, all have grown synonymous with some of the first political or editorial cartoons. In this day in age almost all of the cartoons can be found in the editorial pages of newspaper's and magazines, though you continue to see some right with the rest of the comics. (Doonsbury is an example) You'll also find to distinct styles in this day and age. The first is known as the "traditional" style. This is actually the style which everybody thinks about when you think of a "political cartoon". It uses symbolism (Uncle Sam, elephants and donkeys, etc...) these are still in wide spread use today, and are more visual. The image tells the story with what the cartoon editorializes. Another style of political cartoon is the "Altie" style. This style is a bit more linear and text heavy, and has a tendency to tell its story with words in lieu of pictures.
An element that has grown to be extremely popular in recent years is definitely the development of an artist publishing their cartoons or comics online. Many popular comics and editorial cartoons can be found on the web in place of in the paper. This new avenue for cartoons, both regular and political alike, have given the entire spectrum of the medium a new and increasingly growing volume of contributions. The political satire cartoon is no exception to this rule. Many artists have taken their political cartoons and satire online, not simply so that they don't have to fuss with finding syndication or newspapers to carry their cartoons, but so they are able reach a wider and diverse audience with their intellectual creations.
There's no doubt about it, the net changed the way you view political cartoons. It's unlikely to change soon, however the prospect is exciting. It's almost a political satire cartoon in it of itself to find satire and intellectual criticism in a place where no one person can control who is right and who is wrong. That is the beauty of the cartoon on the internet. Not only does it give true freedom of expression to the artist, but it really allows more people to be exposed to ideas and intellectual stimuli than ever.
