This Golf 101 lesson is a short overview of the equipment you will need to play the game. Of course, the main thing you will need is a set of clubs. A golf club consists of three components the head, the shaft and the grip. The club head can be made of an assortment of materials, from the basic zinc and aluminum that are used in clubs intended for beginners to high-end titanium, which produces club heads that are very strong while still remaining lightweight. Golf club shafts can be made from graphite or steel, with graphite being the favored material for golfers who want a less weighty shaft on their clubs or those who have less strength, such as women and senior-aged golfers. Grips are made of rubber and should be replaced on a regular basis since they wear out and lose their hold over time.
Golf 101 Types of Clubs
According to the rules of golf, your bag can include a maximum of fourteen clubs, which typically consist of three wood clubs, seven iron clubs, a putter and a hybrid club.
Woods are clubs for hitting long shots and are hollow-bodied and large-headed. There are several types of woods based on the loft (angle of the club face) that determines the trajectory of your swing and controls distance. A typical golfer carries a driver (also called a 1-iron) which has the lowest loft of seven-degrees and twelve-degrees, a three iron (fifteen-degree to eighteen-degree lofts) and a five (twenty-degree to twenty-two degree lofts). Many golfers may also carry 7 iron and 9 iron clubs.
Irons are the favored clubs when you are 200 yards or less from the green. The shorter the distance, the higher the iron you will use. Most bags include three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and 9 irons.
Wedges are clubs with high lofts that are used when golfers are extremely close to the green and are designed for increased shot control and shot shaping. The most frequently included club in your bag is the pitching wedge, which has a loft of 46-degrees to 48-degrees. Other wedges, which have correspondingly higher lofts, are the approach wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge and high-lob wedge.
Putters are the clubs that are used to get the ball into the hole when you are already on the green. There are a wide range of putter styles, including short, long, belly, bent, heel-toe and so on.
If you are starting out, however, you can get a beginners set while you are still learning the game and then invest in a complete set once you ve decided you like the game enough to play regularly. A starter set should include at least a wood (a driver or a three wood), three, five, seven and nine irons, a pitching wedge and a putter. And, of course, you will need a bag to carry your clubs in.
Golf 101 Other Essential Equipment
The other equipment you ll need includes golf balls, a golf glove that you will wear on the opposite hand from the one you use for swinging to prevent blisters and golf tees. Eventually, once you ve become a serious golfer, you might also want to invest in a laser range finder that allows you to determine how far you need to hit the ball so that you can use the appropriate club.
