When it comes to luxury watch brands, there is one name that stands out: Rolex. If you feel like it's time that you buy Rolex watches for yourself or a special someone, there are a couple of things you should know first before you start looking for the perfect piece. One of these is the brand's history.
You may think that knowing the roots of this prestigious company won't do much, but it is a great way to gain a heightened level of appreciation for Rolex timepieces. Those who don't know any better view purchasing Rolex watches as one of the greatest expressions of hedonism because of their price. Yes, if you buy Rolex watches you need to shell out a considerable sum - in fact, the average person won't be able to purchase these without saving up for years - but if you are aware of the history of Rolex and how each piece is conceptualized and made, you'll know that these watches are worth spending a pretty penny on.
The history of this watch brand goes as far back as 1905, when the company "Wilsdorf and Davis" was established by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis, his brother-in-law. Initially, these two men focused on the importation (to England) and placement of Hermann Aegler's Swiss movements - which in horology denote the internal mechanism of a clock/watch - in watch cases manufactured by various companies. The finished timepieces were then purchased by jewelers and marketed under their own brand. Later on, though, Wilsdorf came up with the name "Rolex" and had the trademark registered in 1908. In 1915, the "Rolex" company was born.
There are a number of theories as to the etymology of the word "Rolex". One speculation - mentioned in a book about the company - is that it's made up. This means it is not an abbreviation or an acronym for anything, and it was not derived from any other word. Another is that "Rolex" is a contracted form of the words "horological excellence". Yet another theory is that "Rolex" was born out of Wilsdorf's desire for a brand name that is easy to pronounce and remember.
Rolex is considered a "manufacture d'horlogerie" - a term reserved for watchmakers that manufacture most, if not all, of the parts of their timepieces. This is a stark contrast to other companies that only assemble the watch parts which they purchased from outside manufacturers. Being deemed as such is a testament to the care and attention to detail that the company gives to each and every one of its timepieces, and is an assurance that when you choose to buy Rolex watches, you choose quality. That said, it should no longer come as a surprise why these timepieces are sold for far more than the regular watch, and why these are considered as an investment that you can pass on to your children.
