The Grand Canyon offers probably the most amazing sightseeing experiences one can ever achieve in a lifetime. An exquisite work of nature, this extraordinary place was etched from the Earth's crust by the Colorado River. Just gaze at it once and you will agree that it justifiably belongs among the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
Grand Canyon National Park is a vast, 277-mile-long landscape that at it's broadest point measures 18 miles. Depthwise, it is a mile. There are millions of years of history behind the canyon, a fact that attracts more than 5 million people a year (both domestic and international guests) to the park. Bus excursions are a popular way of getting to the place, but, if you're the adventurous type, then a helicopter ride is the way to go.
Grand Canyon choppers give you access to the region's hard-to-reach places, a few of which can't be seen or accessed by bus, foot or airplane. Great example is the fact that you can fly to the bottom of the canyon if you so desire (only available at the West Rim from Vegas). By contrast, that would take half a day by foot and you'd most likely have to spend the night just to be adequately rested for the hike back to the top, which can take longer!
Nearly all landing trips are only available from Vegas. Popular ones include a Champagne picnic, a Colorado River boat trip or full-access to the Grand Canyon Sky Walk, the glass bridge that allows you to walk more than 70 feet past the side of the rim! Personally, I'm a fan of the outing that mixes all these side-trips. As soon as you're done, you've gotten a 360-degree view of the canyon.
Aerial tours are available at the West Rim and the South Rim. The later is mostly aerial, and it is a heck of a flight: you go rim to rim and get to view the Dragoon Corridor, the North Rim, Phantom Ranch and much more. It's a terrific flight packed with photo opportunities.
There are no helicopter trips between the rims. The South Rim, for example, is almost 300 miles from Vegas, which is out of range for a tour helicopter. If your heart is set on the South Rim, you might want to look into airplane/helicopter or bus/helicopter packages. My own preference is the plane because the trip takes just 45 minutes (bus trips, alternatively, take over 5 hours!).
It behooves you to prepare yourself if you journey by helicopter over the summer. The West Rim is especially hot during these months. Temps often climb over 100 degrees. The South Rim is much more mild because its elevation is 6,000 feet. Regardless which rim you wind up at, bring sun block, a hat, sunglasses, a long-sleeved shirt and lots of water. Water can be purchased from the gift shops at the West Rim. The South Rim, which banned plastic water bottles, sells commemorative containers that you can fill for free at any one of the many water stations accessible throughout the park.
The Grand Canyon must not be missed. In the event you don't have the budget for a helicopter tour, do it on foot. Just make sure you get there. However, I'd advise re-allocating a portion your travel budget for a chopper adventure. It's the best way to do the National Park, and an experience you'll cherish forever.
