Your Carrier furnace parts are some of the best parts on the market. Even with the Carrier name, a furnace can still have an occasional problem. It is important to be able to understand the most common parts of your furnace so you can troubleshoot and fix minor problems to avoid spending money on service calls.
Thermostat controls
It might be obvious, but make sure the switch is on "heat" rather than on "cool." If you have set the temperature 5 degrees higher than the room temperature and the furnace still won't come one, check the wiring. If there are any breaks in the wires, get them repaired. Make sure the thermostat is level and firmly attached to the wall.
Circuit Breakers and the Electrical Disconnect
Your Carrier furnace will have a switch that looks like a wall switch. The location of it will depend on the model you have. Make sure that this switch is in the "on" position. Check the circuit breakers to make sure they are also in the "on" position. If your furnace uses fuses, make sure that the fuses are not blown. If they are, replace them
Gas Valve
Make sure that the gas valve is turned on. If the gas valve is on but the unit still isn't working, you can trace the gas line back from the furnace to the meter to see if the gas is on from the outside. Make sure the pilot light is lit. If your furnace uses propane, keep the tank over full because partially filled tanks can freeze and shut off the flow of fuel to the burner.
Furnace and Pilot Igniter Sensors
The furnace igniter sensor senses when the ignition has lit and if it hasn't, the sensor turns off the fuel source. The pilot igniter sensor senses when the pilot light has lit and it allows the fuel to flow continuously. If something goes wrong with these Carrier furnace parts, you should call a professional to make this repair.
Fan Belts
Check the belt periodically for any cracks, thinning, or frayed areas. Also check for debris or copious amounts of black powder on the inside of the blower or on the pulley. Old belts can become brittle, overheat, and slip which reduces the amount of power from the motor to the blower. Replace any belts that show signs of wear or if they are broken.
You should also make sure that the flue is clear of any debris, dirt, and small animals. Always reassemble the flue sections in the same direction and order that you disassembled them. If you have a metal flue, use the clean-out mechanism that is located at the bottom where the flue enters a masonry chimney or transitions to a 90-degree fitting.
Air Filters
Regularly inspect your air filters. If the filter is clogged, the furnace may shut off. Dust and dirt restrict airflow and can damage the heat exchanger. Overheating will cause the furnace to shut down. Carrier furnaces have filters that can be cleaned and reused. If the blower is running but no heat is coming out, clean and replace the filter.
Drain Lines
During the thermodynamic process of heating the home, a furnace can drain off several gallons of water a day in heating season. If the drain lines become clogged or if mold starts to grow, the furnace will shut down. If the drain hose appears to be dirty, remove the hose and fill it with a mixture of one part bleach to three parts water. Let the mixture remain in the hose for a few minutes and then drain.
Air Ducts
The air duct system carries the warm air from the furnace throughout your home. If you have some rooms that are warm and some that are cold, make sure that all the room registers are open. Inspect the ductwork that is accessible for any obstructions, holes, and gaps. Seal any gaps with special metal duct tape to stop any leakages and clean out any obstructions.
Heat Pumps, and Exhaust and Intake Pipes
Make sure that you don't have anything blocking the exhaust and intake pipes. Use a bird mesh screen no wider than 1/2 inch square to cover the pipes and make sure that there is no ice covering them. If either of the pipes is covered with affine mesh bird screen, it may need to be replaced with a larger mesh, no wider than 1/2 inch square. If you have a heat pump, clear away grass and leaves from the fins of the outdoor compressor unit.
Understanding and troubleshooting your Carrier furnace parts will help you to prolong the life of your unit and save some money.
