You have a snowblower, but it is giving you problems now. What should you do? It is easy to troubleshoot your Craftsman snowblower parts so that you can keep your sidewalks and driveways safe and clear of snow.
The Engine Won't Start.
If your snowblower has a safety switch, make sure that it is not in safety mode. On an electric-start snow blower, make sure you have plugged in the starter. Make sure that the choke is on and the engine is primed. Inspect the spark plug and make sure it is connected and it is not damaged or covered with the fuel mixture. If you haven't done so, make sure you replace the old gas with fresh gas. Old gas loses its potency and if it is left in the snowblower too long, it has the tendency to become gummy.
Snow Blower Won't Blow Snow
First, turn off the snow blower. Check whether the spark plug is loose. If it is loose, tighten it. If it is not loose, disconnect the spark plug and carefully clear the snow chute with a stick or clean-out tool. See if there are any objects jammed between the auger and auger housing. Inspect the auger belt tension and tighten it if is loose or replace it if it's broken.
Engine Loses Power during Operation
Your engine will lose power if the spark plug wire is loose. Make sure the wire is firmly attached to the spark plug. If there is any ice or anything else blocking the vent hole in the gas cap, make sure you clear the obstruction before you turn the snowblower back on.
Engine Sputters or Vibrating Excessively.
If the engine is making sputtering sounds, or it runs and then peters out, make sure the choke is off. Drain the gas tank and add fresh fuel. If the engine is vibrating excessively, you could have some other parts that are loose. Make sure you inspect the entire snowblower, including the housing, and tighten any loose parts you find.
It Ran Over Something!
If you accidentally run over a stone or large chunk of ice, your snow blower's auger may stop spinning because the shear pin is broken. The shear pin is a safety device and you must replace any broken shear pins in order to get your blower working again. It is a good precaution to always have some extra ones on hand.
Shear pin trouble could also be the culprit if you suddenly find it difficult to move your snow blower forward or if snow abruptly slows to a trickle or stops coming out of the chute. You can check for a broken shear pin by watching to see if the auger turns while you have someone else run your snow blower.
Before replacing a pin, make sure you take the snow blower to a warm spot where you can work comfortably. Disconnect the spark plug and locate the shear pins. The owner's manual for your snow blower will have a schematic that will show you where it is located. Remove any broken shear pins and slide in new ones; Also check for any missing shear pins before reattaching your snow blower's spark plug and heading back out into the snow.
Proper care and maintenance of your Craftsman snowblower parts will ensure many winters of clear walks and driveways.
