If you're the kind of person who love doing do it yourself projects, you know that one of the most important things you own is your toolbox. Inside the confines of the toolbox reside all the things you need to get through the most important projects. If anything happens to your toolbox, you'd be lost.
While you'll find several very nice toolboxes on the market, most people find that they can't seem to find one that is perfect for them. The toolbox is either too big, too small, or it doesn't have the right amount of individualized storage containers. If you're struggling to find a tool box that's right for you, maybe you should stop shopping. Instead of trying to buy a new tool box, you should try your hand at making one.
Granted making a tool box isn't quite the same thing as many of the do it yourself repair jobs you've handled around the house. At least with the do it yourself projects you had the luxury of having the parts readymade. For the tool box you're going to have to handle the design and construction all by yourself.
The first thing you need to think about will be the type of materials you want to make the tool box out of. Most people opt for one of two materials. Wood or steel. Some people prefer wood because it's easier to work with, store bought tool boxes are never made out of wood, and the wood is easy and affordable to purchase. Perhaps the biggest advantage wood has over steel is that nearly everyone has the tools in their garage need to work with wood, while the same isn't always true of steel.
The down side to making a tool box out of wood is that unlike steel which lasts forever, wood does eventually rot. The more the wood is exposed to moisture, the quicker it will rot and the more frequently you'll have to patch up your handmade tool box.
Most store bought tool boxes have been constructed out of steel. The reason for this is because steel is very affordable and very durable. A steel tool box will put up with a great deal of abuse. Unlike wood, a steel toolbox will last forever and as long as you've done a nice job designing it, you'll never have to worry about getting it patched.
The way the interior of your tool box looks will depend entirely on how you like to do things. If you're the type of person who likes to throw your tools into your tool box, you'll want a nice open design. If you feel that everything should have a designated space, you'll want to come up with a design that includes plenty of shelves, compartments and cubby holes.
The great thing about your handmade tool box is that not only do you have something that you can use for all of your do it yourself projects, you've also created an heirloom future generations will treasure.
