Power washing your home and deck is one of the most effective ways in making your home look fresh and well-maintained. A clean home exterior also helps extend the life of your siding by removing dirt and mildew that can damage the surface over time. Common misconceptions about the difficulty and danger in do-it-yourself power washing may lead you to believe that this is a job better left to pros, but with the proper power washer and a few tips, this is a job that can be done in a weekend.
The first step before power/pressure washing your home is to determine the type of material your home is made of, and the type of paint used, if applicable. You should not power wash a home that has lead paint, as this can be a safety hazard. Also, if your home is made of a hardboard surface like Masonite, you want to avoid power washing, as the pressure from the washer could chip or damage your home's siding.
Prior to beginning your work, be sure to wear rubber gloves, safety glasses and a mask that covers your mouth. The force from a power washer will cause debris from your home to permeate the air. These simple safety precautions will ensure that nothing gets in your eyes or mouth while you are working.
You can affordably rent a power washer at many rental and equipment stores. Be sure to get acquainted with the washer and its parts prior to taking it home. A pressure washer works like a garden hose, but at a much stronger force. Most rental washers have electric motors that help pump and circulate the water from your hose.
Most power washers also come with a variety of nozzles. The larger nozzles are best for your general first round of cleaning. Smaller nozzles have a more concentrated force of power and are best for corners of your house or especially dirty areas that need more attention. Be sure to keep the nozzle moving continuously, to avoid applying prolonged pressure to any one part of your siding.
For especially dirty areas, you may need to use special cleaners. It may help to pre-treat these areas prior to using the power washer by applying a diluted bleach solution with a sponge and allowing it to sit for 1 minute and then rinsing off with the power washer. If this doesn't work, you can rent or purchase a detergent kit with your power washer. Be sure to follow instructions exactly, as leaving bleach on your siding too long can cause it to become discolored or damaged.
Armed with these tips, you are now ready to rent a power washer and give your home a quick and easy facelift. Depending on the size of your home and levels of dirt and grime on your siding, this is a project that can likely be completed in one weekend, but leaves a huge impact on your curb appeal.
