One of the most essential areas of your home to keep clean is your freezer. Because the cold air helps eliminate odors, freezers are often the most overlooked area in your kitchen, and once you get around to cleaning it, the effort is often a huge undertaking.
You can thoroughly clean your freezer with common household products such as vinegar, baking soda, and an old toothbrush. Follow this guideline for a quick and easy cleaning:
1. Remove everything from your freezer. Place items that you want to keep in a cooler. Throw everything else away and double bag the garbage. You'll want to discard these items promptly to avoid a mess as frozen foods begin to thaw. If you are cleaning a freezer that is attached to a refrigerator (versus a freestanding freezer), also empty your refrigerator and place all good items in the cooler.
2. Defrost your freezer. New energy efficient refrigerator/freezers do not get a buildup of frost. If your freezer is less than 5 years old, you may skip this step. If your freezer is an older model, this step is crucial to maintaining efficient cooling control and keeping the parts of your freezer in tip-top condition. Unplug your freezer unit and open the door or lid. The goal here is for all of your ice and frost build-up to melt. Depending on the condition of your freezer, this could take anywhere from 30 minutes up to a few hours. It is important to stay with your freezer during this time to avoid the ice melting onto your floor and creating a huge mess. As the ice begins to melt, use an old butter knife to help loosen large pieces and scrape them into a plastic bag, or dump into your sink.
3. Clean the freezer. Once all the excess ice has been removed, wipe down the surface of your freezer with a solution of warm water and vinegar. Use an old toothbrush to scrub any large pieces of debris. Wipe all any excess water.
4. Deodorize the freezer. If your freezer has a funky smell, you can make a paste of baking soda and water to wipe down the surface, and then rinse with water. You can also place a box of baking soda in the freezer to help maintain a fresh and odorless smell.
5. Restock your freezer. Once you have wiped the freezer surface with a dry towel, it is now time to plug the unit back in and restock. Organize your freezer with tall items in the back and small or commonly used items in the front. This allows you to quickly see the contents and save money by cutting down on the time your freezer door or lid is open.
Thorough cleaning of your freezer should be completed at least twice a year to maintain healthy food. Removing excess frost and keeping the freezer stocked at proper levels helps freezers work more efficiently, thereby saving you money on your utility bills
