Spray painting has taken the art of changing the color of anything from a home to a car to a whole new level. Drabs to vibrant, pastels to matte, anything can be instantly changed with the swipe of a wand shooting out a fine mist of paint. It may not be brain surgery, but there is a proper technique for a paint gun. Using them the wrong way can result in over spraying some parts and under spraying the others.
Spray paint guns can be automatic or manual. Automatic guns are stationary, and they are mounted on a block so that an even layer of paint can be applied to the surface. Manual, of course, means that the spray paint gun is moved across the surface to apply the paint. No matter how the paint is applied, spray painting is downright easy to master.
To begin with, attach the compressor system to the apparatus. This allows regulation of air pressure and, naturally, the amount of paint being applied. Too much pressure can leave globs of paint; too little will leave bald spots on your painted surface. Remember, you don't want to have to move your object too much. Position things like furniture or car parts in an elevated position so that the paint can be applied in 360 degrees.
Hold the spray paint gun perpendicular to the surface being painted. Much like a golf swing, keeping your head still and sweeping across the tee, straight across the surface, will ensure a spot-on application. To further ensure even distribution of the paint, start spraying six inches before you actually reach the surface being painted, and don't release until about six inches beyond the surface. You can also adjust the size of the spray gun's fan. Larger surfaces require a wider fan, thus reducing the number of passes. You can also hold the gun further away from the surface being painted. A good six inches should be maintained when coating larger surfaces; smaller surfaces require a closer proximity and smaller fan to achieve the best results.
Finally, try to think of the spray gun as a paintbrush, and treat it accordingly. While the two forms of painting are entirely different, using a spray gun like a brush, with the same fluidity and motions, will ensure an even distribution of the paint.
Before starting, make sure the surface you are painting is clean and dry. If painting outside, shy away from humid weather and wind. Ideally, 60-to-90-degrees Fahrenheit are good painting temperatures. And remember this most important rule: When starting a sweep of the spray gun, don't stop and don't release pressure on the gun. Doing so will result in clumping and uneven coloring. Using the proper technique for paint guns can have your latest project looking like something the pros would have done.
