When you stop and think about the kind of abuse you put your chainsaw through, it really isn't any wonder that you have to spend so much time caring for your chainsaw chain. This is the part that is responsible for cutting through the wood.
It is extremely important that you make sure your chainsaw chain is well sharpened each time you get your chainsaw out to use it. When the chain is dull, you will have to push harder to cut through the wood. The extra force you have to put on the chainsaw when the chain is dull means that you are going to be standing slightly off balance which increases the chance of you getting injured.
While you can sharpen your chainsaw chain a few times, you need to keep in mind that each time your sharpen the chain, you are wearing the edges down a little bit. The average chainsaw chain usually can only be sharpened four or five times before you are going to have to consider getting it replaced. If you are unsure if it is time to replace your chain or not, you should plan on doing so. This is one time when it is better to error on the side of caution.
This might sound like a simple rule, but every single year there is at least one person who forget it, so it needs to be repeated, before you can replace your chainsaw chain you have to make sure your chain saw has been completely turned off. Don't assume that just because the blade isn't running that you are safe. Trying to replace your chain while the motor is running is a really good way for you to lose a few of your fingers ... or worse.
You start removing the chainsaw chain by unattaching it from the chainsaw bar. As you are doing this you should be paying very careful attention to the way the chain is currently sitting on the blade. When you replace the current chain with your new one, you are going to want to make sure that the new chain is oriented in exactly the same fashion. Take some close up photos of the current chain if you have to.
Starting on the base sprocket you are going to want to start working the brand new chainsaw chain onto the bar. Once you have the new chainsaw chain in place, don't make the mistake of getting the chain really tight as you bolt it on. When the chain is tight it is unable to work properly. What you have to do is leave just enough slack in the chain so that it moves smoothly. Make sure all of your body parts are out of the way before you turn your chainsaw back on.
Resource Box:
A big part of proper chainsaw maintenance is making sure that your chainsaw chain is in good shape. You need to replace your chain after the 4th or 5th time it's been sharpened.
