The central air conditioner is a unit that creates cool air by displacing heat throughout the entire home. Central air conditioner parts need to be checked, cleaned, or replaced when they are worn or defective. You should familiarize yourself with the parts so that you will be able to properly maintain your unit to extend its life and help you save money on cooling costs.
The compressor is the main part of the central air conditioner because it is where the entire heat displacement process begins. It places the refrigerant under pressure and causes the refrigerant volume to drop and transform into a vapor. The condenser then forces the vapor through tubes to the condenser. If the compressor malfunctions, you will need to replace it if it is still under warranty. If you unit is an older model, you should purchase a new central air conditioner because the cost to purchase a new one would be less than repairing the old one.
The condenser coil is the part that receives the vapor from the compressor. The vapor will be very hot from being under the pressure created by the compressor. When the vapor reaches the condenser coil, it collides with the outside air and dispels some of the heat. If the condenser dies, you will need to replace the entire air conditioner.
After the outside heat transfer, refrigerant is squeezed through a small pipe. This is when the thermodynamic reaction occurs. Since the refrigerant has a large surface area being confined in a small space, it cools and reverts back to a liquid. This liquid is sprayed over evaporator coils and mixes with the hot air in the home. While on the evaporator coils, the refrigerant sucks up the moisture and heat. The moisture becomes condensation and drips into a drain and the remaining cool air is circulated throughout the home via the ductwork.
The easiest air conditioner part to keep clean is the filter. The filter accumulates dirt which can affect the performance. If you have a reusable filter, you can take it out and wash it off when you notice dirt covering the entire filter. Disposable filters can be removed and replaced with a new one.
You should regularly clean the condenser, condenser coil, and filter. Keep all debris away from your outdoor condenser and clean the condenser coil. If you live in an area close to the coast, clean the coil to keep salt from coating it and causing corrosion.
One of the most important things you can do for your air conditioner is to observe all safety precautions. Make sure that you have the unit plugged into the proper electrical outlets and that the wiring is intact. Turn off your air conditioner when not in use. Make sure that the outdoor unit is level so that the water will not be able to drain out of it properly.
If you have a basic knowledge of your central air conditioning parts, you can properly maintain your air conditioner and enjoy many years of quality service.
