Outdoor home grills and smokers are very popular in many homes in the United States. However, many people do not realize that there is a very big difference between these two appliances. Although the names are often used interchangeably or in the same category, this outdoor cooking mechanisms are very different, and each tool has their own unique features. Perhaps one of the reasons that the two names are so often confused with one another is because people also interchange the terms grilling and barbecuing. This can be seen in the simple term back yard barbecue, while many people use this phrase, they are not in fact barbecuing, but they are simply grilling foods out in their backyard. This is one of the many reasons why these two tools are so often confused. If you are in the market to buy either a smoker or a grill, before you make a trip to your local home improvement store to make a purchase, it is important that you truly know the difference between these two devices.
The difference between these two outdoor cooking mechanisms is actually quite simple, and once most people understand the difference between the two, they realize that they are in the market for a grill, not a smoker, as the grill is the more popular of the two tools. That is not to say however that the smoker doesn t have its own purposes and own reasons for also being a popular outdoor cooking appliance. In simple terms, a grill is used to grill virtually any type of food. The food is cooked over a fire or hot surface and things such as hot dogs, burgers and vegetables can be easily cooked. The grilled food may have a smoky taste to it, but the process of cooking with a grill is not smoking.
A smoker on the other hand is used for more specific purposes. They are used to barbecue meat in a more complex way than grilling. Large smokers are often seen at authentic barbecue restaurants but smaller ones can also be purchased for in home use. The way a smoker works is, wood, instead of charcoal is smoked inside the smoker, creating a certain aroma filled smoke that will fill the inside of the cooker. The smoker is designed to hold the smoke in and keep the inside of the cooker at a certain temperature for a long period of time, often several hours, so the meat inside can slow cook. This results in tender, smoky tasting barbecue instead of less flavorful grilled meat. Once you understand the difference between the two items, you can visit a home improvement store to look over the different brands of smokers and grills and find one that fits your individual outdoor cooking needs.
