Air cleaners are designed to be attached to the return air duct work on your furnace or heat pump and are meant as to help keep the air inside your home free from pollutants. These pollutants include molds, bacteria, fungi, and dust mites, so removing them from the air helps you stay healthier, and if you suffer from allergies it can help you have a much more restful night's sleep.
Air cleaners have a filtering system which first electrically charges the particles so they are attracted to the filter, and can be trapped. They usually have built-in fan which helps circulate the air, and some even include a charcoal system which is designed to remove lingering odours. They can be enormously beneficial for removing allergens, and it's also really nice to know the air you are breathing in is cleaner than before. However they do require maintenance and regular cleaning to make sure they function properly, and it may be necessary to replace air cleaner parts occasionally. In between times you should make sure it's cleaned thoroughly every month.
This can be done by turning off the power to your air cleaner and furnace, before removing the collector cells and post and pre-filters. Carbon filters cannot be cleaned so these air cleaner parts need replacing every three months. Post filters can be vacuumed. The collector cells and pre-filters can be washed using a mild solution of warm water and dishwasher detergent. They should be thoroughly rinsed and allowed to air dry for at least 30 minutes to an hour before being put back in the air cleaner.
Once the process is complete you can turn the air cleaner back on, and then turn the furnace back on. It's important to note that the air cleaner cannot function properly unless it is completely dry, and this can take a good 24 hours to happen. You may hear it popping up every so often while this process happens, but it is completely harmless.
If your air cleaner developed a fault, and you need to replace any air cleaner parts then you'll have to try to diagnose the problem. It could well be one or both of the collector cells or it could be something as simple as dirt trapped in the ductwork. Another common problem is to find the ionizer wires have become brittle and have simply broken.
It's easy to find a huge range of air cleaner parts available to purchase online, and you'll find most well-known brands are covered. Electronic air cleaners are pretty simple machines, so as long as you feel confident you should be easily able to replace the air cleaner parts yourself. If you don't feel confident then you should always ask a qualified technician to do the job for you.
