Without a refrigerator, we'd be relegated to warm beer, spoiled food and rancid produce. Given a refrigerator that doesn't work, one can be relegated to the same ills. Sometimes a pro needs to be called, but some of the more common afflictions may just have you repairing your refrigerator before the Maytag Repairman can knock on you door.
Nothing spells trouble like quickly-warming milk and melting ice cream, especially after a shopping trip. Refrigerators are as important in modern living as televisions or air conditioning. They are generally reliable and hum in the background, not bothering anyone, minding their own business. And when they stop working, a simple tweak or replacement of parts is all that's needed to get her up and running again.
A fridge has two working components: an evaporating coil and a cooling coil. A compressor sends Freon through the coils like an ice rink sends it through the cement under the ice. The Freon is cooled and sent to the evaporator, thus cooling the air and lowering the temperature. As complicated as it may sound, most refrigerator problems are easy to fix yourself. Let's start with a leaking fridge.
A leaking refrigerator is caused by a condensation leak by the door, an improperly place (or damaged) drain pan or an ice maker leak. A damaged gasket or broken door can cause a condensation leak. Drain pans can be easily repaired or replaced, and they are located at the bottom of the unit. Removal of the grill and inspection of the pan are all that are necessary to either find this cause or eliminate the symptom. Ice water leakage will be evident from the back of the freezer where the hose feeds the unit.
If the door doesn't close properly, the problem is either a gasket or a door seal. A quick, visual inspection should tell you if the gasket is the issue; an ill-fitting door should be obvious to anyone. Poorly-fitting doors can be adjusted with a Phillips head screwdriver, and tilting the unit back can help the door close too.
The light in your fridge should come on the instant you open the door. If it doesn't light, make sure the bulb is still good, and make sure the switch is not stuck. If neither of these can be fixed, a switch might need to be replaced.
Many other things can go wrong with a refrigerator that you can fix yourself or call the repairman. Thermostats go bad, as do condenser fans and motors or compressors. Knowing and repairing your refrigerator and how it works can save time and money over the years you own it.
