The purpose of a garbage disposal is to dispose of the bits of food that sticks to the plates when you put them into the sink. Without the garbage disposal, the little bits of food would go down your drain and eventually cause such a clog that you will have to hire the services of a plumber to correct the problem. When the garbage disposal is working correctly, it will grind the scrapes of food into bits of food so tiny, that they can be safely sent down the drain without any risk to the pipes.
Technically speaking, your garbage disposal is something that you think that you can live without. It might even be something that you don't think that you use very often. Your attitude usually changes as soon as your garbage disposal isn't working correctly. It is than that you truly appreciate how much stuff you put in your sink which could lead to clogged drains.
Most people assume that as soon as their garbage disposal stops working properly, that they need to replace it. This is not something that anyone wants to do, and it is something that can usually be avoided. Most of the time you will be able to repair your garbage disposal, and once it is repaired you will be able to get several more years of use out of the garbage disposal.
The really nice thing about repairing garbage disposals is that they aren't very complicated. There really isn't that much that can go wrong with them. Most of the time the problem with your garbage disposal is that it is clogged. This generally happens when the food that you have emptied into the garbage disposal does not drop down into the pipes correctly and binds your garbage disposal. The good news is that not only is the clog something that you should be able to fix by yourself, but you won't even need to locate any special tools to accomplish the task.
Before you do anything to unclog your garbage disposal, you are going to want to make sure that you have disconnected it from the power. This is an essential step. After you are satisfied that there is no way that your garbage disposal can possibly be turned on while you are handling the clog, you will upend a plunger and slowly lower the end of the handle into your garbage disposal. When the tip of the plunger handle reaches the bottom of the garbage disposal, you are going to gently tap it. Keep in mind that you are trying to knock the clog lose without doing any damage to the actual garbage disposal.
After tapping with the plunger handle a few time, you are going to remove the handle from the disposal, plug the disposal back into the wall, and see if your garbage disposal is working again.
Resource Box:
The chances are pretty good that if your garbage disposal is not working correctly it is probably the result of a clog which can be quickly fixed.
