Many a carpenter, handyman or general contractor, when asked what their most indispensable tool in the chest is, will tell you it's their drill. From hanging fixtures to assembling cabinets, the power drill is a Godsend, and it has saved more than a couple of wrists from carpal tunnel syndrome. Before purchasing a cordless drill, it is important to ask yourself a few questions. How often will you use this drill? What kind of battery life do you need? What options are most beneficial to you? If you are looking for a drill to use around the house and shrink the Honey Do list, you may not need all the bells and whistles that come with a heavy duty model.
This first thing to look for in your new drill is comfort and ease of use. A drill should be easy to handle in different situations. Whether kneeling directly over a screw or crammed in a crawl space, you don't want a drill with too much power for the job.
Batteries are equally important when deciding on a drill. Voltage can range from 6V to 36V. Lower=powered drills are perfect for those Honey Do lists, while higher powered ones can cut through steel or brick. A standard 3/8 inch chuck should be fine for most applications, but again, for heavier usage, you may want to go to a 1/2 inch size. Drill speed, measured in rotations per minute, can range from 300-1500 rpm. A general guide to help in selection dictates anything from 12V to 24 V are good, multipurpose speeds, high speeds are better for drilling holes, while low speeds are good for screws, and a good clutch will protect the drill's motor when the screw or bit meets tough opposition.
There is no use in purchasing a cordless drill without a sturdy battery. Like the digital camera industry, drills are now utilizing long-lasting lithium-ion batteries. These batteries hold their charge up to four times longer than standard rechargeable alkalines. Some drill makers include two battery packs in their drill kits, so if you know you're going to be out for a long day on the job, you may want to have a back up power source.
Remember to practice safe drilling habits. Eye protection should be worn at all times, and use slower speeds to get more torque out of your drill. Keep from banging the tool, and set it on a towel or other soft surface when not in use.
Cordless drills are a great innovation, as we become unencumbered by extension cords and 100 outlets. Purchasing a cordless drill is not a daunting task when one knows what to look for.
