One of the primary problems that most people encounter with dryers they have had for a few years is their inability to effectively dry clothes in a descent amount of time. Homeowners might also notice an increase in their utility bill. It is important to note that this problem will exacerbate the longer you ignore it by simply putting your clothes on a second or even third dry cycle.
It could be that you forgot to clean the dryer's vent filter - one of the most important clothes dryer parts. If this is the case, doing so should immediately eliminate the problem. However, the reason why most dryers lose their effectiveness is that the attached vent duct or hose tends to go unnoticed - until there is a problem, that is.
The machine's attached vent duct has a purpose. When your clothes are drying, the water in them converts to steam. This moisture is removed from the dryer via a transit duct to the vent duct in the back of the dryer. It is then emitted outside of your home.
Along with the steam, lint builds up in the dryer and some of it finds its way into the vent duct. The combination of the two is one sticky mess and over time, can significantly decrease the airflow through the duct.
It is vital that this duct be cleaned on a regular basis. However the problem most homeowners encounter is getting at it. The vent is usually attached to a sidewall or the roof of a home. Although it will cost you money to bring an expert in to do this job, it must be done. A dirty or plugged up vent forces your dryer to work overtime and could heat up more than usually, which could cause a fire. This situation can also create a dangerous increase in carbon monoxide emissions in gas dryers.
If you are handy with such household chores, there is a way to determine if your dryer is working efficiently. You must first remove the duct vent from the machine. Then take a nylon stocking and attach it to the opening of the exhaust system at the rear of the dryer to catch any lint. Run a dry cycle of wet clothes. If the clothes dry in the expected amount of time, it is safe to believe your vent ducts are clear.
Outside your home, be sure to check that your dryer vent is properly sealed. Also ensure that the vent has not become cracked, or clogged with leaves, mold or other outdoor items. Even birds and small rodents can get into the vent so make sure it is completely clear.
Manufacturers recommend that you should have your dryer's vent ducts cleaned and/or inspected every six to 12 months.
