Inventions & Innovations related to Washers & Dryers

Article Category: Home Management

Author Name: Chris Kauffman

Coin operated washers and dryers have been the mainstay of apartment buildings and corner Laundromats for many years now. But how much do you really know about how these machines actually operate?

Perhaps a short history on the original concept for washers and dryers is in order first. The idea of an item that would help dry clothes was the brainchild of a French man only known as Pochon over 200 years ago. He created a hand cranked metal drum with holes in it that rotated to get out the moisture in wet clothes as it spun around over a roaring fire.

Most people know that the earliest washing machine was scrubbing clothes on rocks followed by the invention of a simple scrub board in 1797. In 1920, the Hurley Machine Company out of Chicago, Illinois unveiled the first electric motor washing machine.

We've certainly come a long way from those days when physical labor was necessary to wash and dry our clothes. Today, motor operated machines have made life much more pleasant and coin operated machines have only added to that.

The very first coin-operated machine of any kind was a postcard dispenser invented in England in the 1880s. Shortly afterward, a gum machine was introduced in the New York City subway system.

Since then many other products and services have been offered this way, including coin-operated washers and dryers. This was actually a nifty little invention. When a coin is inserted into a slot on the machine, a built in sensor determines the coin's value according to its weight.

Many manufacturers provide coin-operated washers and dryers to apartment owners and private laundry providers. Naturally, innovation and progress has gone hand in hand and even these are now becoming outmoded.

In 1978, the very first washer operated via a Smartcard with a microchip was introduced. This works just like a debit card. A Value Transfer Machine (VTM) is used to load funds onto the card and each time it is inserted into a machine, the cost of the service is deducted from the card.

This system has proven to be much more convenient, reliable and secure for users of these types of machines. Users no longer have to worry about having the right change for washers and dryers. This system also eliminates the possibility of theft with coin machines being vandalized and the money stolen. It is also a plus for property managers and laundry operators because the money is collected in the VTM and does not need to be collected from each machine.

Some of the companies that have jumped on board the Smartcard washer and dryer systems include Maytag, GE and Speed Queen, as well as such laundry service providers as A.L.L. Laundry Service, Lakeside Laundry Equipment and Phelps Laundry Equipment, to name a few.
