So you've loaded the washer to capacity, added the detergent and water, the washer fills, and instead of the soothing slosh of suds, you hear a wretched groan of belts and metal. Where do you turn? In-home repairmen are going to charge you a hefty fee just to step foot in your house, and buying a new one may not be economically feasible. Rest assured, there are certain steps one can take when figuring out how to diagnose a washing machine problem.
There as many things that can go wrong with a washing machine as there are parts. One of the most common problems a washing machine can give you is anything that can cause it to leak. The first, simplest step to fixing a leak is ensuring the washer's discharge hose is properly seated in the pipe. Some washers may even discharge directly into a sink. Ensure proper seating and run a rinse cycle to see if the leak has stopped.
Often times, a leak may occur at the entrance to the machine. Check all hoses and clamps to make sure they are properly connected. Finally, make sure there are no cuts in the hoses. Remember to run the machine and observe each cycle to get a better idea of where the leak is occurring. This can prevent unnecessary movement of the machine (and backaches).
Inspect the gasket on the inside of the lid. These are generally held on by two metal clips. Pry them loose and inspect for any tearing, dirt or anything else that can break the seal of the washing machine.
Electrical problems can create a bigger headache, and there's always the risk of electrical shock. You may want to call in the heavy artillery for this problem (and, likewise, pay for it), but before wasting money, ensure a couple of common sense factors are in order. Is the washer plugged in all the way? If so, make sure the safety latch that halts operation when the door is raised is not stuck in the raised position. This can be fixed as easily as wiggling it with a small screwdriver.
Your outlet may also be the culprit, and unless you own and can operate a continuity tester, this may also be best left to the pros.
Another crucial part to the operation of a washing machine is the water pump. Water will not cycle in or drain out unless the machine spins. Inspect the water pump, as they are prone to failure. Remove the bottom and back of the machine and run the cycle. Look for any grinding or other signs of a failed pump - including the fins inside.
Learning how to diagnose a washing machine problem is as simple as taking a look at the machine during its cycle. Fixing it, well, that may be a different story altogether. But arming yourself with a little knowledge can save money in the long run, as you'll already know the root of the problem.
