"Ma, can you wait for the game to end before you run that dishwasher?" If this is a regular chorus in your household, it may be time to look for a new one. The same goes for regularly spotty glasses and silverware. The technological advances in dishwashers over the past ten years have been amazing, and with so many new models out there, there are many more features to look for in a dishwasher when replacing the Old Standard.
Today's dishwashers are quieter than the older ones, they have greater loading capacities and they include certain features like "favorite cycle," an option that allows you to program your machine. They are also more cost-efficient when it comes to the electric bill. And, in keeping with trendy kitchen designs, dishwashers are available in stainless steel and even drawer-sized compartments.
Standard dishwashers are 24-inch, under-the-counter models. But if you live in a small apartment, you can always opt for an 18-inch roll-away model. The most important decision in dishwasher selection is what fits your lifestyle. Large families are going to naturally need larger dishwashers. Space is always a factor. Do you have room for a full-sized dishwasher, or should you go with a small, portable cousin? Are you going to stay put in this home for years to come, and is this going to be your dream kitchen? If so, a portable unit would hardly make any sense. Expect to pay anywhere from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars for a dishwasher, so also make sure your bank account can cover the style you want.
Quieter dishwashers have motors mounted to the basepan, as most European models do. Other washers, with pumps and motors mounted to the tub are louder operators, as the tub acts as a natural amplifier.
If water and money conservation are your most important factors when shopping for a dishwasher, check out the Energy Star label. The US Department of Energy rates appliances if they are more efficient than the government's standards. Check also for energy-saving features on the washer like the ability to turn heated dry on or off and hard food disposers, which mean you don't waste water washing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.
Large families and people who entertain will want a machine that can handle loads of dishes at a time. Some washers offer adjustable racks that can be configured to fit larger dishes, serving bowls and other off-sized pieces. Fold-down shelves in a dishwasher allow for additional cups to be added to the load. Regardless of the rack system in the machine, the larger the dishwasher, the more it can hold.
All said and done, personal family size and preference rein king when thinking about features to look for in a dishwasher. But for heaven's sake, at least keep that old one turned off 'til the end of the football game.
