If you want to keep your dishwasher operating smoothly, simple maintenance can prevent most of the problems that often arise over the years. There are still things that can occur within the various dishwasher parts, however. Sometimes, your dishes do not come out clean, the dishwasher simply won't start, or the dishwasher parts are leaking water. There are a few things you can do to fix these problems that can save you money you would have to spend on hiring a repairman to do it for you.
If you call a repairman, you will have to pay somewhere around $75 just for them to come out. If you understand a few things about your dishwasher, however, you can do the work yourself in well less than an hour. Many of the repairs are simple, routine maintenance items that do not require special tools or skills and can cost you nothing if you do it yourself.
The dishwasher is a unit unlike your washing machine. It does not fill with water in order to wash the items within it. Instead, it just fills with 2-3 gallons of water and then mixes it with detergent and pumps it through the machine with spray arms. The washing water is replaced with rinsing water to complete the cycle. The cycle sometimes repeats several times and a timer will help to regulate the amount of water in the dishwasher. The heating element can raise the water temperature and dry the dishes after the cycles are complete.
If your dishes are not coming out clean, take the spray arm out of the washer and clean it. All you have to do is unscrew the cap on top of the arm by trying it clockwise and lift the arm off. Also review how you use the washer. Are you overloading it? Check the manual to make sure you are loading the items into the washer correctly. Make sure you are not obstructing any of the spray arms so they cannot spin. Also check to make sure you are using the detergent that works best on your dishwasher.
After you have cleaned the spray arms, clean the float switch as well. Debris can get stuck in this area and keep the tub from filling correctly. The valve screen is also good to check. It can get clogged and create a lower water level as well. Make sure you take note of how things come apart as you clean various dishwasher parts so you will know how it all goes back together when you are done with the maintenance routine. With any luck, cleaning these dishwasher parts will put your dishwasher back into working order in under an hour at no cost to you.
