Craftsman has created a product that has become a staple in the garden sheds of many people and that product is the weedeater. The weedeater has various parts within the trimmer that interact to make cutting possible. It is important that you have a basic understanding of the Craftsman weedeater parts so that you will better understand how the machine works.
How It Works
Weed eaters use a monofilament line to cut grass and light brush. Some models use plastic or metal blades. When the head holding the line or blades is rotating fast enough the line stiffens and expands horizontally due to centrifugal force. The stiffness acts similar to a knife when struck against grass or soft wood.
What about the Engine?
Craftsman gas-powered weedeaters use four-stroke engines, which are more fuel efficient, and a gas/oil mix to lubricate the engine. These engines use a carburetor and exhaust and the starting system is most often a pull cord that causes the spark at the spark plug; this spark fires the fuel mixture to ignite and start the engine. Electric-powered engines use no fuel but are operated either by cord or battery. Generally the gas-powered weedeaters harness more power than the electric-powered ones and can accommodate optional attachments.
How is it Powered?
The power supply is controlled by the trigger, which is found near the top or the middle of the shaft. The speed of the motor depends upon how firmly the trigger is squeezed. An on/off switch, found at the motor, stops the motor without needing to disconnect anything. On gas-powered units, the choke is used to regulate the air and fuel flow through the carburetor and motor as it is in a vehicle. On electric trimmers the cord or battery pack is usually located at the top where the handle grip is located.
What are the Gears?
All weed eaters use gears. The motor converts power to work via the gear system. A clutch connects to the drum; the drum connects to the shaft that spins the trimmer head. The shaft is found in the pole of the trimmer and is the main moving part.
What is the Trimmer Head?
The trimmer head is the part of the weed eater that holds the monofilament line or the blades that cut the grass. When the shaft turns the trimmer head spins very fast. This creates the centrifugal force that extends the line horizontally. Some trimmer heads come equipped with automatic line feeders that advance the line when you push the button that is found either at the tip of the trimmer head or on the handle.
What are the Options?
Some gas weedeaters are able to accept attachments to make the appliance more versatile. You can switch out the lower shaft to install attachments such as a chain saw or a cultivator. Usually you won't need any tools to make the switch because some models are equipped with a special quick release function.
Once you become more familiar with your Craftsman weedeater parts, you will be able to enjoy your machine more and find more uses for it.
