There is a golden rule when it comes to diet supplement intake: they should not be taken as a whole meal substitute in any way. The reason: these are formulated to augment or provide the amount of nutrients that the body may lack and is not getting from the food we eat. The belief of using these products to skip meals and grow slimmer is false. There is no good substitute from the nutrients we derive from whole foods and organic sources. But as life becomes more of a war with time, a daily dose of these things may be helpful to keep the body functional. Discover what they are.
Vitamins. This is a distinct diet supplement category and is essential for proper body functioning. On a daily basis, the body needs at least 13 vitamins in order to maintain its healthiness. These are as follows: Ascorbic Acid, Biotin, Calciferol, Cobalamins, Folic Acid, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Phylloquinone, Pyridoxine, Retinol, Riboflavin, Thiamin, and Tocopherol. Each of these is further classified into their ability to be absorbed by the body: whether they are dissolved by water or fat.
Minerals. Unlike vitamins, minerals are needed by the body in lesser amounts. This is because it is not being used in the same necessity as the former. Although this is the case, some minerals are still important because of their specific purpose. The mineral calcium is needed to keep our bones healthy for example. Mineral supplements are built for this purpose.
Amino acids. These build the proteins needed by the body. They are essential for muscle generation and proper functioning. Of the 22 known types of amino acids, 13 occur in the body naturally and 9 need to be taken from whole foods. With diet supplements in mind, the opportunity to keep getting these essential amino acids is not totally lost when the food source is not something that we regularly eat.
Fatty acids. These are the type of nutrients in charge of ensuring that the circulatory passages are clear and that the blood does not contain high amount of cholesterol. Cholesterol is mostly derived from products made of animal fats like butter and lard. Fatty acids are responsible for the central nervous system's functioning and in keeping the immune system healthy. Diet supplements usually integrate fatty acids with vitamins and minerals.
Fiber. The most important function of fiber is its ensuring that digestion is well-facilitated from start to finish. The process starts with the intake of food and culminates with excretion of waste products. Fiber supplements are needed in cases where its source from whole foods is not a staple in a person's diet. For those who are planning their meal due to diet commitments, fiber is most helpful in losing weight because it absorbs surplus water and lowers cholesterol levels in the body.
Apart from the above, an additional component of supplement is herbs. Although these are classified differently because they are often used for medicinal purposes, the latest trend in pharmaceuticals introduces it as a supplement.
