Papillon Helicopters is famous for it's Grand Canyon South travels. I was in charge of the family's canyon vacation this year. Naturally, I booked with Papillon. Here is a quick report on my getaway:
There had been six of us. We remained at El Tovar in an area of the Park called Grand Canyon Village, which is based in the borders of the National Park. I highly recommend this hotel. It can be pricey, but it is worthwhile because you are seconds out of the rim's edge.
I believe you can make arrangements with Papillon to be picked up. Otherwise, you can arrange a pick up at the transportation desk inside the Bright Angel Lodge. I rented a Nissan Armada for our trip. I packed the bunch inside and completed the 10-minute drive to Grand Canyon Airport.
The airport is situated just outside Tusayan. You can't miss it. There's lots of activity. Choppers as well as planes arrive and depart from it often. The Papillon terminal is the biggest. I parked our vehicle and got us checked in (by the way, the coffee there is great!).
The climate is extremely friendly. I met a lot of fellow passengers from Germany, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The lobby is comfy. We had been up late yesterday so I slipped in a power snooze. I woke up to my sister yanking on my jacket and telling me it was time to fly.
Helicopters hold up to six folks (if you weigh in excess of 275 pounds you might be asked to buy what they refer to as a "comfort seat."). As this was family, I upgraded each of us to the EcoStar 130, which has 25% more cabin space, theater-style seating, and a 180-degree wraparound windshield for far better views.
I also booked us on the extended flight. Papillon's standard South Rim heli journey is 30 minutes. That's a lot for the majority of people. I figure that what you see in 30 minutes would take a couple of days on the ground. Yet I wanted more (it's not every day you fly the canyon), so I opted for a tour that provided us between 45-50 minutes of time aloft.
Take off was remarkable. Our helicopter, nose forward, roared from the runway as well as made a low-altitude flight over a forested wilderness, which hosts the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine on the planet. In ten minutes, we said bye to the edge and found ourselves front and center in the Dragoon Corridor, the widest and deepest part of the Grand Canyon.
It was a fantastic sight. The Colorado River was below us. So was the Temple of Ra. The spires and buttes were unique. There were no clouds on the horizon. Our pilot described that our field of vision was about 140 miles compared to 30 for people on the ground! The chopper powered on to the stately North Rim. Here we turned back, taking in Hopi Point and Grand Canyon Village as we made our descent.
Papillon documents all flights employing digital cameras on the exterior as well as inside of the helicopter. I suggest you buy a copy of your journey on DVD. I did so. The quality was great. I created copies for everybody. They cherished it. Definitely an excellent souvenir of our heli tour.
Papillon Choppers Grand Canyon South Rim journey gets two thumbs up from us. This was a excursion of the South Rim. I'm glad we did the extended flight. The additional airtime had been worth every penny. Our guide was excellent and entertained us with facts and anecdotes of the region. He made the location come alive for my family. This was definitely a trip highlight for my clan and me. We'll certainly be carrying out this air tour again.
