The Exmoor National Park is definitely an area of outstanding natural charm situated in the South West of England. It is an area of open moorland, steep-sided wooded valleys and spread across the counties of West Somerset and North Devon it shares a coastline in excess of 50 miles. The combination of coastal areas and moorland gives a diversity of scenery that provides the visitors to Exmoor with many choices of what to see and where you can visit. Families can choose a sea-side holiday and then blend it with exploring the valleys and heather-covered moorlands with their far-reaching views across to South Wales.
Along with the stunning Exmoor countryside there are lots of very pretty towns and villages to be visited and explored. Some of the places not to be missed are described below and are typical of the Exmoor region.
Dunster
Dunster is among the few remaining medieval villages in the UK. It still retains its yarn market place at the centre in the village and at the top of the High Street is Dunster Castle. Both Dunster market place and Dunster Castle are managed through the National Trust. The Exmoor National Park visitor centre is found in Dunster so there is plenty for any Exmoor visitors to explore together with browsing the local shops selling a variety of gifts and handicrafts and of course sampling the tea shops and restaurants.
Porlock
Porlock is situated on the Exmoor coast and has a wonderful setting in the Vale of Porlock. The village is set about a mile back from the sea and it's very much a functional village for the local villagers and also the Exmoor visitors. There are plenty of tea shops and good restaurants available.
Bossington
Bossington is certainly a pretty hamlet found on the coast at the eastern end of Porlock Bay. The village is managed through the National Trust and the majority of the cottages of Bossington are leased long term by the residents. Typically the cottages are thatched and lime washed white and some of these retain the round bread ovens which make these cottages so special to the area. Bossington can be a popular village to begin coastal walks from and there are a handful of places to have a cream tea and light refreshments.
Selworthy
Selworthy sits inland from Bossington to the side of North Hill and the very pretty white church of Selworthy is often picked out within the landscape from miles away. Selworthy is really a unique village of Exmoor in the fact that it had been purpose built by the Acland family for their estate workers. It is among the most visited village by Exmoor visitors and it's an extremely pretty hamlet of thatched cottages that has a white church towards the top of the hamlet. The National Trust now manages the hamlet and there is a National Trust shop and tea room at the centre of Selworthy Green. The tea room is famed due to the exceptional cream teas.
Higher Kitswall is a lovely Exmoor self-catering cottage set in beautiful scenery, a mile from Dunster and in the Exmoor National Park, and offers the ideal accommodations to see the Exmoor region. Having reached the self-catering cottage it is perfectly practical for the visitor never to use their car again and walk from the cottage to Dunster, Bossington, Selworthy and Porlock. The cottage is situated on a working stud farm and is dog friendly plus visitors are welcome to bring their horses. Bev and Don have lived in the region more than 20 years and may recommend places to visit, walk, mountain bike and ride within the Exmoor National Park.
