Every day, people are suffering from various disorders and diseases and doctors are at times, clueless as to what they should do. For example, since the year 2000, the number of eating disorders faced by men have increased from 5% to over 10%.

It is important to realize that doctors have become very influenced by the media. By this, we mean to say that whatever the doctors hear on the news regarding a particular mental disorder, they believe. This false belief causes a lot of psychologists and psychiatrists to misdiagnose various mental disorders in a patient when in reality; the patient may not even have any mental disorder.

In a case study, H v. Pennine was a woman who was previously diagnosed with breast cancer. During a routine checkup, her CT scans showed that she had a very short amount of time to live. After two months, doctors stated that they interpreted the scan incorrectly. After intensive care, she was finally nursed back to health and her underlying problem, gone.

Due to this heavy influence, whenever you see any hype regarding a particular mental disorder or problem, you can be sure that there are a few doctors behind it and this is going to be a very common symptom diagnosed by many mental health professionals all around the world.

While in most cases, psychologists and psychiatrists are correct in their diagnosis, they can be wrong. If this should occur, not only does the patient suffer but also society as a whole.

First and foremost, the patient is subject to unnecessary medication and treatment, which are usually extremely expensive. In addition, incorrect medication can cause people to get worse, not better. This is why it is so common to see people that have a certain mental disorder behave no differently with or without medication.

Patients are getting worse because mental health professionals are relying heavily on medication to resolve most mental and psychological problems. The current mental health system provides short term fixes rather than trying to get to the root of the problem and getting it resolved all together. For example, it can be seen that most Americans are given anti-depressant medication to help them numb their pain. While medication is necessary, proper help should also be administered so that the root of the problem is resolved and the patient taken of medication. Recent studies show that the use of anti-depressants have increased tremendously over the last 20 years – over 400%.

Secondly, society suffers greatly because a hype regarding a common health disorder leads many people to believe they may also be suffering from the disorder when they really are not. Society is forced to spend thousands of dollars on medical and psychiatrist bills in order to diagnose a problem that they may not have.

The current mental health system needs to be update. If all goes unchanged, many people will be subject to misdiagnoses and unnecessary problems which include pain, "heartache", waste of money and time.
