The Dangers of Psychologists & Psychiatrists over Diagnosing & Medicating Their Patients
Over the last few years, people have grown conscious of the seriousness of various mental illnesses and are open to seek help for their emotional problems in an attempt to lead a normal and happy life. In a way, this is a very good thing because now people are getting treatment for their problems rather than letting them pile up and ruin their lives.
However, with great advantages, come a few disadvantages. Sometimes, psychologists and psychiatrists over-diagnose symptoms. This is partly due to the fact that some disorders are very similar to each other and as a result, can be mistaken for more common ones. This misdiagnosis can cause people to be led to believe that they have a mental disorder when in actuality, they may be fine.
It is important to realize that whenever there is a lot of hype about a certain disorder; you can be sure that that doctors are going to lean all their diagnosis's towards that disorder, even without actually realizing it. As a result, psychologists and psychiatrists become prone to seeing disorders that are not really there in a patient.
There are a few disorders that are very commonly over-diagnosed by doctors. Keep in mind that these disorders do exist and are very common amongst many people; however, because of the numerous cases of people with these disorders, these various disorders are easily misdiagnosed. These disorders are mentioned below:
• Depression,
• Chronic illness,
• Hypothyroidism,
• Stress,
• ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and,
• Bipolar disorder
Individuals that are misdiagnosed with any of these disorders may have to face very serious consequences that are by no means pleasant. The common consequences of a misdiagnosis to a patient can be:
• Medicinal Side-Effects: If incorrect medication is given, the administered drugs can cause suicidal impulses, nausea, chances of drug abuse, allergic reactions and etc.
• Ineffective Treatment: A misdiagnosis means that not only does the patient suffer unnecessary pain but the treatment is ineffective. This results in a waste of money and time. In rare cases, a misdiagnosis and incorrect medication can cause a disorder to accelerate and cause more harm than before.
Electroshock therapy is one such way of many psychiatrists medicate their patients. However, that does not mean that it is safe for everyone. Politician Michael Dukakis's wife, Kitty Dukakis stated in a report or Newsweek that there are many benefits of electroshock/electroconvulsive therapy. However, she experiences memory loss due to the treatment. Although she finds it to be acceptable, other patients with heart or neurological problems may face possible danger if they undergo electroconvulsive therapy.
There are many dangers associated with a psychologists and/or psychiatrists misdiagnosis. It is important to a little bit of your own research on a mental disorder before agreeing to what the doctor is saying.
