5 Dangers of Relying Only On What Your Doctor Tells You
Doctors are the backbone of any society. These health professionals are trained in identifying and curing various health problems that may present themselves over the course of an individual's life. While most people rely on the word of doctors above all else when it comes to their health, they should not be fooled into taking somewhat of a blind leap into what they are saying.
History shows us that there have been numerous cases in which doctors have ended up misdiagnosing a patient and causing them more harm than good. In today's society, wrong diagnoses have become extremely common. For example, it is not strange to see hundreds, if not thousands of people walking around the streets that have been diagnosed with depression.
In fact, depression is one of the most common misdiagnosis that many mental health professionals make. If an individual goes to their psychiatrists a little upset or worried about something, they will simply be given some anti-depressants and tell them that they are suffering from depression. They completely disregard the root of the problem and provide a temporary fix so that they can keep you coming back for more treatments.
It is important to realize that there are some dangers associated with just blindly listening to what you doctor tells you. Five dangers are mentioned below:
Misdiagnosis
One of the most common dangers is, of course, a misdiagnosis. Misdiagnoses have become very common in today's society as many doctors are influenced by the word of the media. Whenever a renowned doctor comes on TV and says that there is a particular mental health problem that is spreading, the mental health professionals will listen and tell their patients that they are suffering from that common disorder, even when they may not be.
One prime example is that of the death of Sergeant Tania Corcoran-McCabe who was misdiagnosed with stomach pains in mid 2007. She came to the hospital six months pregnant and was sent back when an unfortunate misdiagnosis was made.
Unfortunately, she came back within a day of beign discharged where it was necessary to perform a C-section. She and one child (twins) lost their lives at the operating table. This is not to say that the doctors do it intentionally. In most cases, its unintentional, however, it causes a number of problems for the patient.
Unnecessary Pain
When you just believe the word of a doctor, you may not be sure of what you are getting into. You may end up enduring unnecessary pain in your treatments when there could be a pain-free treatment available.
Increased Medical Expenses
It is important to realize that while doctors may care for their patient's well being; they must also look after their own finances. As a result, some doctors may prescribe medication and ask you to keep coming back for regular checkups so that they can assess the progress you made in regards to your mental health.
These regular checkups may be unnecessary and will often cause you to spend hundreds of dollars on medical bills that are of no good use.
Prone To Problems
When a person receives treatment for a misdiagnosis, they are often prone to other problems. When a doctor informs their patient that they are suffering from a problem when they really may not be, the patient is prone to a lot of psychological stress for no good reason. The patient starts believing that they have the disorder and tries to change their lives in order to live peacefully. A simple reliance on what the doctor says can cause so many problems.
Waste of Time
Doctors may ask you to go through a series of tests when you really just need one or two tests, if any. This battery of tests wastes a lot of time for the individual, not to mention causes them unnecessary pain and wastes money.
With all this being said, it is important to do your own research about a disorder that you have been diagnosed with and not simply listen to the doctor.
Search online for the symptoms, causes and treatments for the disorder that you have been diagnosed with and then act accordingly. Only accept medication and treatment if you are fully informed.
