Descriptions of the emotional intelligence skills are as old as any descriptive accounts of human behavior. They are present in writings of the Greek philosophers, Shakespeare and descriptions of the first US President. People with high emotional intelligence often have a unique ability to flourish where others flounder. Emotional intelligence is the "something" that is a bit intangible in each of us. It gives a powerful name to how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions that achieve positive results.
Social intelligence is notable as the first succinct label for these skills. E.L. Thorndike, one of the first psychologists to study intelligence, recognized a whole body of skills that were unrelated to an individual's ability in reading, writing and arithmetic. He called these skills "social intelligence" because they were particularly obvious in interactions with other people. Some folks, he found, were incredibly intelligent but limited by their ability to manage behavior and get along well with others.
It was not until the 1980s that emotional intelligence (EQ) took on its current name. A doctoral study in psychology coined the term. The researcher wished to more adequately describe the impact of emotions on behavior and in situations that are personal as well as social. Powerful research on emotional intelligence soon followed, including an entire series of studies from Yale linking EQ to personal achievement, happiness and professional success. Researchers worldwide had a new name for the skill that explains why two people of the same intelligence can attain vastly different levels of success in their work and personal lives.
Emotional intelligence is also a flexible skill that is readily learned. While it is true that some people are naturally more emotionally intelligent than others, high EQ individuals can be made, even if they are not born. Emotional intelligence taps into a fundamental element of human behavior that is separate from your intellect. People often wonder whether smart people are also the ones who are emotionally intelligent. There is no connection between your IQ and your EQ; you simply cannot predict someone's EQ based on how smart they are.
Regular intelligence (IQ), on the other hand, is not flexible. It is merely your ability to learn and, save a traumatic event such as a head injury, it is fixed from birth. Your IQ is the same at age five as it is at age 50. You do not get smarter by learning new facts or information because your ability to learn does not change.
It is also a common mistake to confuse emotional intelligence with personality—the stable "style" of behaving that defines each of us. Personality influences how emotional intelligence takes form in any person, but they do not occur together in a predictable way. You cannot guess an individual's EQ based on his or her personality, or vice versa. Regular intelligence, emotional intelligence and personality measured together are an excellent way to get a picture of the whole person. When you measure all three in a single individual, the overlap between the three is small and insignificant.
