The key with emotional intelligence is that you have to practice and find good tools that will enable you to take your emotional intelligence skills to the next level. It isn't as simple as finding other ways for increasing your self-awareness, because you actually need qualified guidance that you can rely on to take your skills to the next level.

Our emotions often have a positive influence on our behavior. In addition to making us happy, excited, loving and kind, they motivate us and create action. It is critical for the rational brain to recognize beneficial emotions and use them to their fullest. Individuals high in emotional intelligence can accurately identify emotions, and make use of emotions to their benefit. The rational brain has the unique ability to channel negative emotions into the most constructive behavior possible and reap the benefits of positive emotions to the fullest.

The path between the rational and emotional centers of the brain is the road to emotional intelligence (EQ). Information travels between them much like cars do a city street. The traffic flows in both directions and the wider the path, the less chance it will become congested and slow the flow of information. As you build emotional intelligence, you are basically having city crews widen the road between your emotions and reason. Some of us struggle with a two-lane country road and others have a five lane highway helping them to understand their feelings and do something productive with them. A generous flow of traffic between the emotional and rational centers of the brain is the cornerstone of a high EQ.

Your EQ is affected by your ability to form and keep a well-traveled connection between the limbic system and the front of the brain. The more you think about what you are feeling—and do something productive with that feeling—the more developed this pathway becomes. The more traffic flowing in both directions, the better. When traffic only flows in a single direction, the result is behavior overly-dominated by reason, or, as in the case of Phineas Gage, behavior controlled by the mind's emotional response to situations.

Why do people spend so much time stuffing their feelings or running with them entirely? The answer lies with the one friend each of us has who believes that he really is a skilled gambler. The odds of the game are irrelevant for this brave soul. Another roll of the dice, shuffle of the cards, or spin of the wheel is a chance for him to prove his superior talent and, of course, win money.
