Exmoor National Park is found in the South West of England and spans the moorland of North Devon and West Somerset, two counties that share a 50 mile stretch of rugged coastline. Exmoor is characterised by open moorland, sessile oak covered valleys and beautiful beaches and coastal villages and towns. It is an region of outstanding natural beauty. The Exmoor National Park Authority work year round to maintain the beauty and conservation of this natural habitat for all to enjoy. Part of their total conservation work is to maintain two herds of Exmoor ponies that will help conserve the distinct flora within the region.
The Exmoor ponies of today number around 100 to 300 breeding mares. They are free roaming semi-feral ponies who have access to the moorland and through their foraging help preserve the moorland habitat. These breeding mares produce roughly 150 foals. Although they're semi-feral they all are owned and the breeding is carefully controlled by their owners. The herds are gathered up annually through the autumn, marked and numbered and some are sold for domestication. Bampton Fayre is known on Exmoor for the horse sales held annually, it still today, remains popular. The Exmoor pony is recognized for its endurance, high intelligence plus they excel as working hunter ponies. They are suited to children and adults alike.
Hardiness and strength distinguishes the Exmoor pony from other UK native breeds so it helps the pony to survive the tough conditions within the open moorland. Their winter coats are highly insulating and protect them with the cold and rain. There are 2 types of Exmoor pony; the Acland type (from herds left for the Acland family in 1800 when the Royal hunting grounds were sold) and also the Withypool type that's darker and slightly lighter compared to Acland. The Exmoor pony breed nearly became extinct during The second world war as a result of soldiers using them as target practice while others killing them with regards to meat. The breed still remains on the critical list today with their numbers set around 800 ponies and just below the 1000 level which could help secure their survival.
Exmoor ponies are free roaming and can commonly been seen around Dunkery Beacon, Porlock Common, Withypool Common and Dunster Deer Park. A visit to the Dunster Deer Park is especially recommended. It lies above the medieval village of Dunster and it is set in a stunning location near to Dunster Castle. It was set up in the middle of the eighteenth century so as to offer a regular source of venison for the Luttrells, owners of Dunster Castle. It appeared they had their share of illegal poaching and hunting. The Exmoor ponies may be seen in the Dunster Forest area regularly roaming the high moorland and foraging the new shoots on the gorse bushes.
Dunster Forest and Dunster Deer Park make a fantastic centre to discover Exmoor. Set within this stunning location is Higher Kitswall cottage providing self-catering accommodation within the Exmoor National Park and Dunster Forest.
