The Exmoor National Park was granted the status of the first International Dark Sky Reserve in Britain, due to the minimal light pollution and frequency of cloudless nights. The award was created by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) in late 2011. This status now means the night-sky is protected from light pollution and the Exmoor National Park Authority can ensure lighting controls will be in place.
Other parts of the United Kingdom have already been designated as Dark Sky Places and Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park in Scotland and the Channel Island of Sark hold the status of Dark Sky Community. These areas are now governed by lighting controls to make certain that no new light pollution is introduced by man-made light.
"Definition of Dark Sky Reserve: a public or private land possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural, heritage and/or public enjoyment mission of a large peripheral area. The International Dark Sky Reserve consists of a core area meeting the minimum criteria for sky quality and natural darkness, and a peripheral area that supports dark sky values in the core and receives benefits from them as well. The International Dark Sky Reserve is formed through a partnership of multiple land owners and/or administrators that have recognized the value of the starry night through regulation and/or formal agreement and/or long term planning."
Exmoor is very dark at night and the Milky Way is clearly visible overhead in considerable detail. Representatives with the BAA Campaign for Dark Skies surveyed Exmoor National Park during August and making use of Sky Quality Meters confirmed that readings compared favourably with other Dark Sky Places in the United Kingdom.
A newly established observing site has been established at Wimbleball Lake in the Exmoor National Park and it has been nominated as the first Dark Sky Discovery Site on Exmoor. The visitor centre is managed by Science and Technology Facilities Council's UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC). Wimbleball Lake Discovery Centre offers an excellent position for individual and group activities overlooking the lake with hard standings for telescopes and wide ranging clear skies over the lake and beyond.
A perfect place to stay and enjoy looking at the stars activities is Upper Kitswall cottage, situated in a unique position within the Exmoor National Park and providing excellent self-catering accommodation for 2-4 people. Bev and Don are knowledgeable hosts having lived and farmed in the area for upwards of twenty years. Kitswall cottage is placed on the fringe of the Dunster Forest and has clear big sky views across Exmoor and away from any light pollution. After reaching the farm you'll be able to leave your vehicle and walk or cycle for miles while not having to cross any roads. Well-behaved dogs and families who want to bring their horses are welcome to stay. The self-catering accommodation is well suited to star gazers, walkers, mountain bikers and riders of horses alike. The cottage is situated about a mile away from Dunster, a stunningly beautiful medieval village inside the Exmoor National Park.
