The worst time for your air conditioner to go on the fritz is when the thermometer climbs near the century mark. You may feel rushed to call an ac service contractor, but before you hire the first contractor whose name you find in the telephone book to make repairs, you should cool out and take time to conduct some research.
A lot of people make the mistake of hiring the first contractor the find or the cheapest one they can find. A lot of the time, this rushed "just get it done, I'm hot!" attitude has resulted in people having to call another contractor to repair the mistakes that the first contractor made. The danger is that you may be hiring someone who does not have the experience, knowledge, or licensure to perform ac repair. This could also happen if you hire someone that was recommended to you. Just because the contractor successfully repaired your sister's ac does not mean that they are qualified to repair your system.
Researching ac service contractors begin with a simple list of contractors. You can call your local Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau for a list of licensed contractors. By doing this, you will have information about their backgrounds and license statuses. These organizations will have a history of complaints logged in their files. You can then determine if a contractor is worth the risk of hiring.
If you are not able to obtain a list from your local organizations, you can use the phone book. Some contractors will include in their listing that they are licensed and their years of experience. Ask questions about the status of their licenses. After you get your list, call each contractor and ask questions. Find out about the history of the company and how long have they been in business. Ask if they have had many complaints within the last year. The complaint history will give you a good indication of the quality of work they are producing recently.
Get at least three quotes for service from three different companies. Make sure that you get the bids in writing. The bid should include a complete description of the work that needs to be performed and the materials that need to be used. Compare the quotes. Do not let price be the only deciding factor in your process. Make sure that the quoted price is in line with the work that needs to be done. If you receive a bid that seems unusually higher than the other ones you received, you should probably avoid that contractor.
. Find out if the company provides any type of warranty and make sure that you read and understand the terms that are listed therein. If you have a third party warranty or insurance policy, find out if the contractor will honor that policy and if the repairs needed are covered by that policy.
Be sure that you keep track of all paperwork generated and of all maintenance service dates. Choosing an ac service should not be a rushed affair; it should be carefully researched and all correspondence and phone communiqu should be effectively documented.
