When you ask someone what comes to mind when you think about central ac units the usual response is a cool home environment and they are right. But today's modern air conditioners do that and even more. Located outside your home and resting on a concrete slab is a marvel of engineering and efficiency called central air conditioning. The primary purpose is to circulate cool air throughout your home providing a degree of comfort on hot summer days. But there is more. Not only do central ac units cool your home but they also help control humidity and remove air borne particles from the cool air as it is pushed through the system and into your home.
This is how it all works.
Inside the housing that sits beside your home is a system of coils for the expulsion of heat, a compressor that turns liquid refrigerant to gas, another set of coils used to cool, an expansion valve to regulate the flow of refrigerant to the compressor and two fans. One fan blows across the hot side coils to expel heat while the other blows across the cold coils to force cool air into your home. Almost all central ac units operate in this way.
Way back in the early 1900's a young engineer named Willis Carrier developed the modern air conditioner. Early attempts to create central ac units way back then bear little resemblance to today's energy efficient appliances. However some of the principles remain the same. Discovery of a process called phase conversion led to the modern air conditioner. A liquid refrigerant, when pumped through a compressor turns into gas and absorbs heat. Properties in the refrigerant allow them to change at low temperatures causing the cooling effect. The use of the expansion valve allows this cycle to continue, liquid to gas to liquid. Heat is extracted and cold air introduced creating a comfortable home environment.
Beyond cool, central ac units remove moisture from the air inside your home by collecting it on the cold coils to be drained off outside. Less internal humidity also helps to keep you cool and there are some health reasons like mould and mildew that tend to form in high humidity environments.
Another bonus with central ac units is removal of particles suspended in the air by use of a filter. When cool air is introduced into your home it passes through a filter mechanism that captures air borne particulates. This process is especially important to those who have allergies especially to dust. It is important to clean air filters on central ac units as a regular part of your maintenance program. This ensures maximum efficiency in helping to clean internal air.
To recap, modern central ac units do much more than cool your home. Not only do they provide that degree of comfort but they also act as dehumidifiers and filter the cool air being introduced into your home.
When Mr. Carrier was building his first central ac units, way back when, I wonder if he had any idea how popular they would become and how they would change the comfort environment of so many homes across the country.
