Hard to believe but the first air conditioning system was designed in the early 1920's by a man named Carrier. His name still appears on air conditioners manufactured today. As they say, 'you've come a long way baby.' From those humble beginnings over ninety years ago, today's systems are an exercise in engineering and efficiency. Let's take a look at the components of a basic air conditioning system.
Why an air conditioners system cools is due to a process called phase conversion. When a liquid converts to gas it absorbs heat and when captured in the coils of your air conditioner system, the compounds of the refrigerant evaporate and condense again and again at lower temperatures. Heat is absorbed and the refrigerant is then compressed back into a liquid state for continual reuse. Your refrigerator at home has the same technology achieving the same result but in a smaller box than your house.
But there is more. A modern air conditioning system has a filter used to trap particles from the air avoiding being forced into your home. Anyone with allergies will appreciate that capability. These units also act as a dehumidifier. Reducing humidity levels inside your house helps to cool the interior and make a more comfortable environment. These additional features enhance the primary function of an air conditioning system and that is to cool the interior of your home making it more comfortable inside.
- What's inside
- An air conditioner is made up of four main parts.
- The evaporator that receives the refrigerant liquid
- The condenser used to transfer the heat
- The expansion valve regulating the flow of refrigerant to the evaporator
- The compressor used to return the refrigerant to a liquid state
On the cold side of your air conditioning system, sits the evaporator and a fan that forces air over the cold coils and into your home. The other side of the unit has the compressor, condenser and a fan that extracts the hot air from the compressed refrigerant pushing it outside. An expansion valve is located between the two sets of coils to regulate the flow of refrigerant to the evaporator. Returned to the evaporator the liquid refrigerant goes through a reduction of pressure causing it to become gaseous again. The cycle continues.
Window air conditioners, as an air conditioning system, operate in a slightly different manner than central air, even thought the components and function are the same. Stuffed inside that small metal box that fits inside your window frame is housed the hot air vents at the rear of the unit while the condenser and cooling fan face the inside of the room. Adjustments for temperature control and fan speed on this air conditioning system are located on a panel inside the room.
Central air shares the thermostat control with the home heating system. And the condenser and compressor are located outside of the house in an all weather housing.
A more recent air conditioning system of cooling your home is the split system unit. These combine the best of the window air conditioner and central air giving consumers another choice in home comfort. No matter what type of air conditioning system you choose, they all accomplish the same task and in the same basic manner. On a blistering hot summer's day we can all thank the Carrier man.
