The HVAC story
The functions of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) are all interrelated with air conditioning and heating being the primary concern of most American homeowners. Hot or cold, how air is moved through your home is called 'room air distribution' the purpose being to provide internal comfort for you and your family.
In most North American homes internal comfort control, is conducted by two appliances air conditioning and heating.
Heat control, is regulated by a furnace, heat pump, or boiler while air conditioning includes central air, room air conditioners that fit in a window and split air conditioners the big brother to window units. When it comes to air conditioning and heating, no matter what type of equipment is installed in your home, they all perform the same function. They keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter.
Installation and function
Heating homes has been a necessity for thousands of years. Fortunately science and technology have made air conditioning and heating easier for comfort control today, than ever before. One of the options is the tried and true, hot water system that uses a boiler to heat water that passes through a network of pipes to radiators located in each room. Hot water systems are very efficient but lack the ducting required for central air condition. These systems are usually found in much older residential buildings.
Today, the most common method of home air conditioning and heating is the Forced Air furnace. These can be fueled by electricity, propane, natural gas and heating oil. Heat is generated by the use of one of these fuels and then forced through the ductwork of your home by a large fan on the furnace. It operates much like the hot side of your air conditioner except in this case you want the heat for comfort and are not expelling it outdoors as with the ac unit. A household furnace is usually found in a basement or an appliance room that may also contain your hot water heater.
Air conditioning and heating have come a long way with the introduction of the reversible cycle heat pump. This appliance functions as both the source of heating and cooling all in one unit. Thermal energy is collected from outside air and converted to heating while for cooling the process is reversed extracting heat from inside your home. Think of a heat pump as your furnace and central air conditioning unit all in one and like central a/c, housed outside your home.
Research and development in air conditioning and heating has now become a global industry. Here in The United States the America Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) some 50,000 members strong, continue to maintain high standards for design, function and environmentally friendly appliances for air conditioning and heating of homes and businesses.
The benefits to consumers seeking air conditioning and heating is more efficient appliances that amortized over time becomes less expensive to own, maintain and operate. The fact that newer appliances are more eco friendly is a big plus for all of us.
