Not too many homeowners like hearing that they may need to replace boiler systems in the home. However, the fact is that they only last so long and will need to be replaced one day. Deciding whether or not that yours can be repaired should be the first thing to discover. There are several suggested troubleshooting steps for you to take before you make the decision and five of the most important are listed below.
If the boiler unit is producing no heat at all, then you should double-check to ensure the thermostat is set correctly at a level for it to kick on. Additionally, make sure that the circuit breakers and fuses are all properly working and placed into the on position. Replace any blown fuses and reset the circuit breaker if it has been tripped.
Check to make sure that the pilot light has not been accidently blown out. Sometimes a draft can make a pilot light go out, which will not let the boiler operate properly. When you look inside the chamber you should be able to see the small light-blue flame burning. If you do not see it then you can go ahead and re-light it yourself or call for assistance from a boiler repair specialist.
Check the water level by examining the pressure-relief valve to see if there is any water spurting out. If so, there may be too much water without a sufficient amount of air. Also if you touch the sides of the boiler tank towards the top and it is as hot as the lower portion, you will need to drain some of the water from the tank.
Physically examine areas for possible water leakage. Check all around the boiler area where you can see. Some overhead pipes that may be leaking would show signs on the floor and the surrounding area. After you have found a leak you will need to repair the leaking connection. It will require you to turn off the supply of water and possibly drain the entire boiler system.
If your boiler problem is caused by some of the radiators not providing heat in the home, it could just be that air is trapped inside the individual radiator. Try bleeding the air from the cold radiator by turning the bleed valve to the open position. Wait for all of the air to escape and the water to begin spurting and then close the valve. This should solve the individual radiator problem. It would also be helpful to check all radiators in the home to be sure they are in working order.
If the boiler needs to be replaced after all of the troubleshooting steps have been tried, then you will need to decide if you will call a repair specialist or try to do it yourself. Boiler experts would have the knowledge to replace boiler systems in less time than someone that has never done it before. Also, considering the electrical aspect and worrying about gas lines will be off your mind and within their expertise.
