Hearing that you need to replace a furnace can come as a huge blow if you aren't prepared for the news. It ranks right along with needing to replace a roof or pipe in your plumbing; no one wants to think about spending the money. Even if money isn't a factor, you may not have the time available to put in the effort to replace a furnace on your own.
Unfortunately, furnaces aren't made to last forever. The average life of a furnace can be anywhere from 15 to 20 years when it is maintained properly. After you have had yours for that long, it may be time to replace it. With all of the technological advances of today, there's a good chance that yours is outdated anyway. There are always new appliances on the market with updates and innovations that were probably not available before.
Be prepared for the costs before it is actually time to replace your furnace. Nothing will hit you harder in the pocketbook than having an unexpected expense come up when you are unprepared. Start a savings account, if you don't already have one, for emergency purchases. When you need to replace a furnace, it can feel like an emergency, so it is good practice to have the funds available beforehand.
Do a bit of research to get information before you decide which type of heating unit that you will purchase. There are several kinds that are available and you will need to choose the right one for your home. Some of the types of heating options are radiant heating, electric heaters, corn furnaces and gas furnaces. You can alternatively heat with space heaters or portable heaters if your room is small and closely confined.
Briefly, the tried-and-true methods are baseboard heaters that are electric and the gas forced air types of furnaces. Baseboard heat comes from the air contacting an electric element inside the unit and rises once it is heated. The cooler air is, in turn, forced back down inside the unit reaching the heater element and returns as heated air.
The gas furnace has a heat exchange that heats the air as it passes through. The air comes into the furnace through an intake duct when it is drawn in and returns when it is forced into the home using ducts or registers. This is the most common of the heater types. An oil furnace works in the same fashion.
Radiant heating and corn furnaces are newer ways to heat your home. The radiant heat is basically pipes or cables that are built under hardwood or non-carpeted flooring that produce heat for individual rooms. The corn furnace is relatively new, but is gaining popularity because of the economic benefit of utilizing corn, which is a source of renewable energy.
