Furnace repair can cost you hundreds of dollars that were not on your budget. However, not all repair problems require the immediate attention of a service technician whose services you have to pay for by the hour. Typically, a technician will be sent out by a company that was set up with the intention of making money.
Therefore, even if the job at hand could have cost you 70$ and the technician needed to be at your house for only 30 minutes, they will make much ado about checking your overall system. Though this is a good thing and a mark of professionalism, it will also come with a hefty bill. To save on that unnecessary cost, here are a few basic tips.
One of the most common furnace problems is that the furnace will not run. This is particularly common when people have recently moved into a new home. Whereas the solution to this may seem obvious on the face of it, the numbers of technicians called in to look at the non-starting furnace are telling. The first possible cause is that there is no power getting to the furnace unit.
The solution to that is to first check if the power is switched on from the main power supply, which most often will be a wall power switch. If that is switched on, then the next power source to check is the power switch on the furnace itself. Once you locate that, ensure that it is on too. If that still does not work, then you have a bigger problem.
If you have a bit of knowledge of furnace repair and electrical works, then the next thing to look out for is fuses that are blown. These would usually be located on a separate panel on the furnace unit, and you can test these with basic electrical current testing equipment. If all those are working, then another possible area could be the furnace unit is out of gas. If you are not too familiar with the furnace, then that might be a good time to call for help.
Another common problem is to have the furnace not producing sufficient heat to warm the house. In this instance, the first thing to do is to check the settings on the furnace before calling in a repair technician. Usually, a slight raise of the furnace thermostat setting will solve this problem with no further trouble.
Another common area that will cost you a pretty sum if left unattended and that does not require a technician is a regular cleaning. Just as your kitchen sink would clog up with too much grime and leftovers in the drainage, your furnace will clog up from dust, vermin, and other forms of dirt with time. Routine cleaning will not only keep your furnace working efficiently, but will keep the furnace repair technician away for longer.
