If you select to embark on an a/c repair job for yourself, there are basic things you should not do for your own safety first and for the good of the equipment second. As in all do it yourself jobs, there are numerous things that could go wrong. Among the worst things that do go wrong is that some actions may negate the warranty you have on your equipment.

For that reason, you need to be careful when embarking on any do it yourself repair to ensure you do not contradict your warranty terms. Do not embark on any repair work without first reading through your warranty document in the event it is still valid. Whenever you undertake a repair on an electrical appliance, the first thing to do is to make sure that the electricity supply is switched off.

Too often, people will switch off the machine itself, but will not switch off the electricity supply to the machine. What this means is that you may touch a wire that is still live which may result in a burn or an electric shock. In extreme situations, this small error may lead to electrocution or even a fire to the equipment or to the house.

Do not open bolts and nuts and generally dismantle the equipment. This is one of the most common actions that may actually lead to voiding your warranty terms. If you are not precisely sure, do not attempt an a/c repair that requires you to dismantle parts of the equipment using spanners and screw drivers.

Do not attempt a repair job in the dark. It may well happen that your a/c breaks down in the dead of the night. Though the natural response is to try and restore the machine immediately, it is an unwise choice. Unless all that is required is to switch on a wall switch or the machine's electricity switch, undertaking repair in the dark is likely to generate more harm than good.

Avoid the counsel and good will of non-experts posing as experts. The neighborhood is always full of these good intentioned friends who do not know anything about your system except that they had fiddled with their system some months back and things seemed to have worked. The trouble with those is that they bring very high sounding knowledge that is merely fluff.

If you need to do a repair job, then it is best that you call in a technician sent by a reputable company. At least then, if something does go wrong, you can always complain to the company and if need be seek compensation for their mal-practice. Remember that if you partner your limited knowledge with your neighbor's limited knowledge, the a/c repair may end up being very expensive for you.
